Chapter 12 - Julian’s Last Envelope

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Dominic stared at his mother.

“Why would Dad’s founder certificate be in Marcella’s house?”

“It wasn’t Marcella’s house then.”

Evelyn looked at the black box.

“It belonged to Julian.”

Dominic went silent.

His younger brother.

Marcella’s late husband.

Evelyn continued.

“Your father gave each of you an emergency envelope.”

“I never got one.”

“You did.”

Dominic frowned.

“I would remember.”

“You threw yours into my desk and said, ‘If the world ends, call me.’”

Harold covered a smile.

Dominic sighed.

“That sounds like me.”

“Julian kept his.”

“What was inside?”

“A certified duplicate of the founder record and instructions for protecting the family trust.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“And Marcella found it.”

“I think so.”

That explained everything.

Marcella had not discovered the family structure through corporate records.

She had discovered it after Julian’s death.

Among his private papers.

She learned Evelyn was the controlling founder.

She learned about the Protective Amendment.

She learned that any direct attack on Evelyn’s ownership would fail.

So she constructed something more subtle.

A voluntary transfer.

A medical incapacity claim.

A merger that would move the assets before anyone could challenge her.

Dominic looked at the clock.

11:49.

Eleven minutes.

Harold was already dialing.

“Police are still at the estate. Marcella’s residence is on the same property.”

Dominic called Detective Whitmore.

He explained the envelope.

She did not sound pleased.

“You are not entering that house.”

“Fine.”

“You’re serious?”

“I said fine.”

Whitmore hesitated.

“That was easier than expected.”

“I’m growing.”

Evelyn rolled her eyes.

Whitmore obtained Marcella’s consent first.

Marcella refused.

Then Thomas told the detective he had personally seen Marcella remove boxes of Julian’s business documents from a locked estate archive earlier that month.

Harold supplied corporate records establishing those papers as contested company property.

Whitmore began seeking emergency authority to secure them.

Time kept moving.

11:52.

Dominic could do nothing but wait.

He hated waiting.

Evelyn watched him pace.

“You know what your father would do right now?”

“Break a door.”

“Exactly.”

Dominic looked at her.

“And you would stop him?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“I would let him break the wrong one while I found the key.”

Dominic laughed quietly.

Then Evelyn’s expression softened.

“He loved you, Dominic.”

“I know.”

“He loved Julian too.”

Dominic looked away.

Julian’s death had broken something in the family.

Dominic had blamed himself for not being around enough.

Evelyn seemed to read it.

“What Marcella became after Julian died is not your guilt to carry.”

His phone rang.

Whitmore.

“We secured the office.”

Dominic stopped pacing.

“And?”

“There’s an envelope in the safe with Julian’s name on it.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Whitmore continued.

“But Marcella says it belongs to her.”

“Open it.”

“We’re cataloging first.”

“Detective.”

“Dominic.”

He looked at the clock.

11:55.

Five minutes.

Then Whitmore’s voice changed.

“Hold on.”

Silence.

Paper.

A sharp intake of breath.

“Mr. Vercetti?”

“Yes.”

“There’s a letter in here addressed to you.”

Dominic froze.

“From who?”

“Your brother.”

👉 With five minutes left before midnight, Julian Vercetti was about to speak from beyond the grave — and Marcella had spent eighteen months making sure Dominic never heard him.
