Chapter 11 - The Woman Who Actually Built the Empire

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Dominic read the page twice.

Then a third time.

FOUNDER AND PRINCIPAL CAPITAL CONTRIBUTOR:

EVELYN MARIE VERCETTI.

He looked at his mother.

“You?”

Evelyn sat in an old wooden chair beside the archive cabinet.

For the first time that night, she looked tired.

Not confused.

Not fragile.

Tired.

“There wasn’t much of an empire then.”

Harold turned pages rapidly.

“These records show your original investment funded sixty-eight percent of the first company.”

Dominic stared.

“Where did the money come from?”

“My father.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“He owned three hardware stores in Connecticut. When he died, I inherited them.”

Dominic had known about the stores.

He had never known what happened to them.

“I sold two.”

“To fund Dad?”

“To fund us.”

That distinction mattered.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your father had courage. Charm. Connections. He could walk into a room with ten dollars and leave with a hundred.”

She touched the old ledger.

“But he couldn’t keep books.”

Dominic smiled despite himself.

“That sounds like him.”

“I handled the money.”

Harold continued reading.

Evelyn’s investment had been converted into controlling founder shares.

Years later, when the family businesses expanded, she allowed her husband to become their public face.

Not because he owned everything.

Because she preferred privacy.

The name became his.

The control remained hers.

And the Founder’s Protective Amendment had one devastating clause.

Any transfer of Evelyn’s voting rights obtained through coercion, incapacity claims, undisclosed compensation, or fraudulent representation automatically triggered an emergency reversion.

Her votes did not go to Marcella.

They went into a protected trust.

The trustee named in 1998 was Dominic.

Dominic stared at the page.

“She knew.”

Harold understood immediately.

“Marcella must have discovered the original structure.”

Evelyn nodded.

“About two months ago.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Harold checked his phone.

11:44.

“We can deliver notice electronically.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Do it.”

Harold photographed and scanned the amendment using the secure legal portal.

He sent copies to the Vercetti board.

The merger counsel.

The escrow company.

The corporate registrar.

Then he stopped.

“There’s a problem.”

Dominic’s stomach tightened.

“What?”

“The amendment references an attached founder certification.”

He searched the box.

Nothing.

“No certification.”

Evelyn looked confused.

“There should be.”

Harold checked every envelope.

“It isn’t here.”

Dominic looked at the leather ledger.

No.

Then the flash drive.

Harold connected it to the secure archive terminal.

Password protected.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

The password hint appeared.

THE DAY HE LEARNED WHO WAS BOSS.

Dominic looked at his mother.

She burst out laughing.

“Oh, your father.”

“What?”

“The day we got married.”

Harold entered the wedding date.

Access granted.

One folder appeared.

Inside was a video file.

And a scanned founder certification.

Harold opened the certificate.

His face tightened.

“The scan helps.”

“But?”

“We need the original if Marcella challenges authenticity.”

Dominic checked the time.

11:47.

Thirteen minutes.

Evelyn suddenly stopped smiling.

“I know where the original is.”

“Where?”

Her eyes filled with dread.

“In Marcella’s house.”
