Chapter 1 - the crimson glass

The Grand Ballroom of the Blackwood Plaza was a cinematic masterpiece of corporate luxury. Bathed in bright, crisp video colors, the room shimmered with thousands of crystal lights reflecting off polished marble floors. A magnificent holiday tree towered over the center, adorned with silver ornaments and glowing with warm, festive illumination. The guests—an exclusive circle of executives, board members, and elite stakeholders—mingled effortlessly. Their fair, rosy skin caught the brilliant light, and the sound of confident American accents blended smoothly with the gentle notes of a live string quartet. It was a picture of absolute power, wealth, and prestige.
Yet, beneath the glittering veneer of corporate triumph, a quiet game of observation was taking place.
Adrian Blackwood moved through the crowd with the silent, predatory grace of a ghost. At forty-five, he was the legendary founder and CEO of the global luxury hotel empire that bore his family name. Broad-shouldered, deeply masculine, and terrifyingly composed, Adrian possessed a commanding aura that usually made boardrooms fall dead silent. But tonight, he was invisible. To test the true character of the top-tier executives running his multi-billion-dollar corporation, Adrian wore a standard waiter’s uniform—a crisp white shirt, a black bow tie, and a dark vest. His rugged, handsome face was completely ignored by the glittering crowd, who looked right through him as if he were a piece of furniture.
He balanced a heavy silver tray laden with crystal flutes of vintage champagne, navigating the sea of designer gowns and tailored tuxedos. His dark eyes scanned the room, cataloging the whispered alliances and casual cruelties of his corporate ladder-climbers.
His destination was VIP Table One, the center of gravity for the evening.
Seated at the head of the table was Vanessa Cole. At forty years old, she was the Senior Vice President of Global Operations. Breathtakingly elegant, Vanessa was also ruthless, arrogant, and obsessively driven by status. She wore a luxurious crimson evening gown that clung to her figure like liquid fire, complemented by heavy diamond earrings, a dazzling tennis bracelet, and expensive designer heels. She was currently holding court, laughing sharply at a joke made by a regional director, her fair, rosy complexion flushed with wine and triumph.
Adrian approached the table smoothly, lowering his gaze with calculated humility as he offered the tray of champagne.
Vanessa, caught mid-sentence, glanced up. Her eyes didn't meet his face; they landed only on the white uniform. Annoyed by the brief interruption, she didn't just decline the drink—she made a statement to entertain her tablemates.
With a deliberate, sharp flick of her wrist, Vanessa struck the side of the silver tray.
Crystal glasses shattered against the marble floor, champagne splashing across the expensive rugs and staining the hem of her crimson gown. Before Adrian could even blink, Vanessa lifted her own full glass of expensive red wine and poured it directly over his head. The dark crimson liquid soaked his hair, dripping down his forehead and staining the crisp white collar of his waiter’s shirt.
The surrounding executives burst into loud, mocking laughter, amused by the clumsy servant.

Vanessa leaned back in her chair, a cold, triumphant smirk twisting her crimson-painted lips. She looked him dead in the eye, her voice dripping with venomous condescension.
“This place isn’t for you.”
