Chapter 4 - the revelation

The words hung in the crisp air like falling glass.

For three agonizing seconds, nobody moved. The executives at VIP Table One blinked in utter confusion, their brains struggling to process the impossible statement. The CEO? But Adrian Blackwood was supposed to be in Geneva, or arriving on his private jet later tonight, or—

Every single executive slowly turned their heads from the stage, looking back toward the man standing beside Vanessa’s chair.

Adrian Blackwood reached up slowly and pulled off the remaining elements of the service disguise. The realization hit the room like a physical shockwave. The man Vanessa had just humiliated, the man she had poured red wine over, the man she had mockingly ordered to use the back entrance, was the sole owner and absolute ruler of the global empire they all worked for.

Vanessa’s face, usually radiating a rosy, arrogant glow, drained entirely of color. In a matter of seconds, every drop of blood rushed from her cheeks, leaving her skin a ghastly, chalky white. Her designer champagne flute slipped from her trembling fingers, shattering against the table, the golden liquid pooling like spilled blood across the white tablecloth.

Her breath caught in her throat. Her jaw went slack. The diamond earrings she wore suddenly felt heavy and suffocating against her freezing skin.

Adrian did not rush. He did not raise his voice. He simply adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke suit, his rugged features locked in a mask of terrifying, ice-cold calm.
