Chapter 8 - the spider's web

The digital files revealed a sprawling, intricate network of corporate betrayal. Vanessa Cole hadn't just been stealing money; she had been blackmailing junior executives, manipulating vendor contracts, and deliberately driving struggling local luxury properties into bankruptcy so her syndicate could buy them out at a fraction of their value through anonymous shell companies.

And right there, shining brightly in the audit logs, was the signature approving the largest fraudulent transfer of the year.

It wasn't Vanessa’s signature. It belonged to the Chairman of the Board.

Adrian stared at the screen, his rugged face entirely devoid of surprise, though a cold, dark fury settled deep in his chest. He had suspected for months that the old guard was trying to loosen his grip on the company. They wanted a figurehead CEO, someone they could control, someone who wouldn't notice if billions in international assets slowly leaked into their private pockets.

They had thought inviting him to walk the floor in disguise was a clever way to test his awareness. Instead, it had walked him straight into the lion's den.

His phone buzzed on the desk. It was an incoming call from an unlisted, secure satellite number.

Adrian picked up the receiver and brought it to his ear. He didn't speak.

“A bold move tonight, Adrian,” a smooth, familiar voice chuckled through the speaker—the unmistakable tone of the Board Chairman. “Humiliating my senior vice president in front of the entire board. You’ve always been theatrical, but even by your standards, that was unnecessarily dramatic.”

Adrian leaned back in his chair, swirling the bourbon in his glass. “She poured wine over a man she thought was a servant, David. I simply returned the favor on a corporate level.”

A brief pause hung on the line, followed by a cold, sharp laugh. “Pride is a dangerous luxury, my boy. You built this empire on the illusion that you could watch everything, control everyone. But tonight proved you missed the rot right beneath your nose. Vanessa was just a small piece of a much larger machine.”

“A machine that is about to grind to a halt,” Adrian said softly, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a terrifying weight that made the line hum with tension.

“Try it,” the Chairman replied, his tone hardening into absolute defiance. “Tomorrow morning, we hold an emergency board meeting. According to section four of the corporate charter, if the board votes by a two-thirds majority that the CEO's actions have endangered the company’s reputation, we can suspend your voting shares indefinitely. The votes are already locked, Adrian. By noon tomorrow, you’ll be the one walking out the back door.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.
