Chapter 2 - the unyielding calm

The laughter at VIP Table One died down just a fraction as the guests waited for the lowly waiter to grovel, apologize, or flee in humiliation. In the corporate world, power was displayed through dominance, and Vanessa had just asserted hers with absolute cruelty.

Adrian Blackwood did not flinch.

He did not wipe the red wine from his brow. He did not let out a sigh of anger, nor did he shrink under the gaze of the laughing executives. His handsome, rugged face remained entirely impassive, carved from stone. His terrifying composure was so absolute that the air around him suddenly felt heavy, charged with a strange, unnatural stillness.

With slow, deliberate movements, Adrian reached up and unbuttoned the dark waiter’s vest. He slipped his broad shoulders out of the soaked fabric, peeled off the ruined white shirt, and folded them neatly together.

Not a single word left his mouth.

He turned toward an empty chair beside the table, draped the folded uniform over the backrest with meticulous precision, and stood tall. Beneath the waiter’s disguise, revealed in the bright cinematic light of the ballroom, was an impeccably tailored, bespoke midnight-black suit that cost more than most people's cars. A platinum luxury watch glinted on his thick wrist, catching the light of the crystal chandeliers.

Vanessa’s smirk faltered for a split second. She frowned, her sharp eyes darting over the expensive cut of the suit, but her fierce arrogance quickly pushed the doubt away. She assumed he was merely a high-end catering captain who fancied himself a businessman.

She lifted her chin, her blue eyes flashing with pure contempt, and pointed a manicured finger toward the heavy double doors at the far end of the hall—the service corridor leading to the kitchens and loading docks.

“People like you,” Vanessa said, her voice dripping with mock pity, “belong at the back entrance.”
