Chapter 3 - the silence before the storm

The string quartet continued to play its cheerful holiday tune, blissfully unaware of the tectonic shift happening near VIP Table One. The surrounding executives, eager to curry favor with the powerful Senior Vice President, chuckled softly at her parting shot, nodding in agreement.
Adrian did not look at the service corridor. He looked down at Vanessa, his dark eyes devoid of any warmth. The silence stretching between them was suffocating.
Before Vanessa could demand that security remove him, the low murmur of the ballroom was pierced by the sharp ring of a microphone feedback loop echoing through the state-of-the-art sound system.
Every head in the grand hall turned toward the raised banquet stage at the front of the room.
Stepping up to the mahogany podium was the Board Chairman. At sixty-two, he was a legendary figure in international hospitality—distinguished, formal, and immensely powerful. He wore a pristine black tuxedo, his silver hair neatly combed, his expression grave and commanding. He tapped the microphone once, and the entire room fell instantly, breathlessly silent.
The Chairman’s eyes swept across the hundreds of elite guests, bypassing the executives, the directors, and the politicians, until they locked directly onto the tall, broad-shouldered man standing beside Vanessa’s table.
