Chapter 1 - the girl in the pink dress

The grand ballroom of the Verrone estate gleamed beneath massive crystal chandeliers, casting warm golden light across polished white marble floors. High society moved in waves of silk, velvet, and tailored suits. Millionaires, politicians, and power brokers spoke in hushed, reverent tones whenever Damiano Verrone walked past. At forty-two, Damiano carried himself with the lethal grace of a predator who owned every square inch of the city. He wore an immaculate bespoke black tuxedo over a crisp black shirt, his dark hair neatly styled, his jaw defined by light stubble. His piercing eyes swept the room with quiet calculation, missing nothing.
Behind him stood Rafael Conti, his longtime security chief and closest confidant. Rafael’s broad shoulders and watchful gaze acted as an invisible barrier, ensuring that no one approached Damiano without silent permission. The gala was an annual display of wealth and dominance, an untouchable fortress of power.
Until the heavy carved doors leading from the private servants' corridor clicked open.
A little girl stepped out onto the marble floor. She was no more than six years old, small and fragile in a sea of towering adults. Her long wavy brown hair was tied back with a pale pink ribbon, perfectly matching her pale pink lace party dress. She wore clean white socks, shiny pink shoes, and clutched a folded piece of white paper against her chest with both hands.
For a moment, nobody noticed her. She took small, quiet steps, weaving between evening gowns and champagne flutes. Her wide hazel eyes scanned the crowd until they locked directly onto Damiano.
As she walked toward him, the surrounding conversation began to die down. Guests turned, their eyes widening in shock. A child in the ballroom was unusual enough, but an unescorted child walking directly toward the most feared man in the state was unthinkable.
Rafael reacted instantly, stepping forward to intercept the child.
Damiano raised one hand, fingers slightly curled. It was a subtle gesture, but Rafael froze immediately, stepping back into position.
Lily did not stop until the toes of her pink shoes tapped against the polished leather of Damiano’s shoes. She looked up, tilting her head back to take in his towering frame. Her small hands trembled against the paper, but she did not run.
The grand hall fell into complete, suffocating silence.
Lily swallowed hard, her sweet voice carrying across the quiet room.
"Can I borrow you as my daddy… just for one day?"
Damiano did not move. His dark eyes widened minutely, his breath catching in his throat. For the first time in memory, the master of the Verrone empire looked completely stunned. The men beside him held their breath, terrified of what the boss might say or do.
Slowly, deliberately, Damiano bent his knees and sank down until he was at eye level with the little girl. He did not frown, nor did he look cold. His gaze softened just enough to reveal a flicker of curiosity buried under layers of stone.
Lily nervously extended the folded paper. On the front, drawn in clumsy red crayon, was a giant heart.
At the far edge of the ballroom, near the service entrance, a figure in a black-and-white housekeeping uniform appeared. It was Claire Carter. She was thirty-one, stunningly beautiful with porcelain skin and auburn-brown hair pinned into an elegant, modest bun. The second Claire saw her daughter standing inches from Damiano Verrone, the color drained completely from her face. Her hand flew to her throat, her lips parting in silent terror.
Damiano kept his eyes on Lily.
"Why me?" he asked quietly, his deep, resonant voice sending a shiver through the room.
Lily looked over her shoulder toward the back of the hall. Her hazel eyes found her mother for a brief second before she turned back to Damiano, her chin trembling.
Lily gently placed the handmade card into his large, warm hand.
"Because Mommy cries when she thinks nobody sees her," Lily whispered, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. "And she said only the strongest man could ever keep the monsters away."
Damiano’s expression shifted. The hard lines of his face tautened with a mixture of shock and profound recognition. His gaze flicked past the little girl, cutting straight through the crowd to the far corner of the ballroom.
Claire quickly dropped her eyes, staring at the floor, her entire body shaking.
Several high-profile guests exchanged bewildered, suspicious whispers. Rafael tilted his head, his sharp eyes narrowing as he locked his attention on Claire, his tactical mind instantly cataloging her panic.
Instead of calling security, instead of demanding to know how a servant's child had breached the floor, Damiano did something that made every jaw in the room drop. He reached out and gently closed his fingers around Lily’s tiny hand.
He stood up, towering once more, but he did not let go.
With measured, commanding steps, Damiano walked through the stunned crowd, leading the little girl in pink right beside him. The guests parted like the sea. Claire took a step forward from the shadows, terrified that she was about to lose her job, her home, or worse. She reached out a trembling hand, but Rafael subtly shifted his stance, blocking her path with a quiet shake of his head that told her to stay silent.
Damiano reached the elevated head table at the front of the hall. Without a word, he pulled out the heavy velvet chair beside his own and lifted Lily onto the seat.
Lily looked down at the glittering crystal, the silver cutlery, and then back up at Damiano. A bright, innocent smile lit up her face for the very first time.
Damiano unfolded the handmade card.
Inside, there was no long letter, no ransom, no hidden plea for money. There was only that single, vibrant red heart, drawn with careful, deliberate pressure.
A faint, rare smile touched the corner of Damiano’s lips. It was a smile no one in the room had ever seen on his face.
Lily leaned closer, tugging gently on the sleeve of his black tuxedo jacket. Damiano tilted his head down, bringing his ear close to her lips.
A few yards away, Claire felt her heart hammer violently against her ribs. She wanted to scream, wanted to run forward and pull Lily away, but her legs were rooted to the floor in pure dread.
Lily cupped her little hands around Damiano’s ear and whispered in absolute confidence:
"Mommy said you were supposed to be my daddy for real."
Damiano froze.
May you like
The faint smile vanished instantly. His dark eyes flared with raw, sudden intensity. Slowly, like a predator turning toward the scent of a long-buried truth, he turned his head and locked his gaze squarely onto Claire.
Across the room, Claire met his eyes. She went completely pale, her knees trembling so badly she had to brace herself against the wall to keep from collapsing.
