Chapter 4 - a daughter's touch

The master suite on the third floor was larger than any apartment Claire had ever lived in. Massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the manicured gardens, while a king-sized canopy bed was piled high with down pillows and silk sheets.
Lily sat in the center of the bed in her oversized pink pajamas, holding a mug of warm milk with both hands. A plate of half-eaten strawberry pastries rested on the nightstand. She looked up with wide, sleepy eyes as Damiano walked into the room.
He had changed out of his formal tuxedo into a soft charcoal-gray cashmere sweater and dark slacks. He looked less like the intimidating mob boss and more like the man Claire remembered from their rainy afternoons in Chicago.
"Hey there," Damiano said softly, standing at the edge of the bed.
"Mr. Damiano," Lily chirped, setting her mug down carefully. "Martha gave me three whole pastries. Mommy only lets me have one on Saturdays."
Claire, who was sitting on the edge of the bed smoothing Lily’s blankets, gave an apologetic look. "Lily, don't be impolite."
"It's fine," Damiano said, a faint smile gracing his features. He stepped closer and sat on the opposite edge of the bed. The mattress dipped under his weight. "In this house, you can have as many pastries as you want. But only if you finish your milk."
Lily giggled, a bright, melodic sound that seemed to illuminate the heavy, solemn room. "Are you really going to be my borrowed daddy for one day?"
Damiano looked at Lily, then raised his gaze to Claire. Claire’s eyes were glistening, full of both fear and an undeniable spark of hope.
"No, Lily," Damiano said, his voice deep and thick with raw emotion. "I'm not going to be your borrowed daddy for one day."
Lily’s lower lip quivered. Her brow furrowed in confusion. "You're not?"
Damiano reached out, his large, scarred hand gently brushing a strand of brown hair behind Lily’s ear. His fingers were surprisingly gentle, trembling slightly with an emotion he had kept locked away for decades.
"I'm going to be your daddy every day," he whispered. "For the rest of your life. If you'll let me."
Lily stared at him, trying to comprehend the magnitude of his words. Then, without warning, she lunged forward, throwing her small arms around Damiano’s neck. She buried her face into his shoulder, her tiny fingers clutching the fabric of his sweater.
Damiano froze for a split second. He had faced assassins, rivals, and federal agents without flinching, but the weight of his daughter’s arms around his neck paralyzed him with an overwhelming wave of fierce, unyielding love. Slowly, he wrapped his powerful arms around her small frame, pulling her tight against his chest, closing his eyes as a single tear slipped down his cheek.
Claire turned her head away, weeping silently into her hands, overwhelmed by the sight she had dreamed of for six painful years.
After twenty minutes of quiet conversation, Lily’s eyelids grew heavy. Damiano laid her gently back against the pillows, pulling the warm duvet up to her chin. Lily clutched her handmade card with the red heart under her pillow and was asleep within seconds.
Damiano stood up and walked toward the French doors leading to the balcony. Claire followed him into the cool night air.
The city lights twinkled in the distance. The cool breeze carried the scent of pine and late-blooming roses.
"We need a DNA test," Claire said quietly, leaning against the stone balustrade. "Not because I have any doubt, Damiano. But because of your family. Your lieutenants. The men who follow you. They won't just accept a housekeeper’s daughter as your heir without proof."
Damiano pulled a small silver lighter from his pocket, turning it over in his fingers. "I don't need a piece of paper to know she is my blood, Claire. She has your kindness and my stubbornness. But if it gives you peace of mind, Rafael will arrange for a private physician in the morning."
He turned to face her, his gaze intense under the moonlight. "Now tell me everything. Every cold winter, every sick day, every time you struggled while I sat in this palace thinking you abandoned me."
Claire looked down at her hands, the rough skin of her fingers showing the years of hard domestic labor. "We survived, Damiano. It wasn't easy, but we survived. When my mother passed three years ago, I had no family left. I applied for a job at the estate through an agency because the pay was three times higher than anywhere else. I thought... I thought this place was so huge you would never notice another maid in the west wing."
Damiano took a step toward her. His hand reached out, gently capturing her chin, tilting her face up so she had to look at him. His thumb stroked her cheek, wiping away the remnants of her tears.
"I will spend the rest of my life making this up to you," he vowed, his voice low and vibrating with absolute conviction. "You and Lily will never be cold again. You will never be hungry, you will never be afraid, and you will never scrub another floor."
May you like
Claire’s breath hitched. His touch sent a current of warmth straight through her heart, reigniting the flame she had tried so desperately to extinguish. "Damiano... your enemies. What if they find out about her?"
Damiano’s eyes darkened into black ice. "Then they will learn what happens when someone threatens what is mine."
