Chapter 9 - the queen of the estate

The morning broke bright and cloudless over the Verrone estate, bathing the stone walls and emerald lawns in warm, golden light. The marks of the previous night’s brief skirmish at the outer perimeter had been entirely erased by maintenance crews; the lawn was manicured, the gravel raked, and the fountain sparkled beneath the sun.

Inside the grand dining hall, a massive breakfast feast was laid out across the long mahogany table. Silver platters held fresh pastries, Belgian waffles, scrambled eggs, and bowls of fresh berries.

Lily sat at the head of the table, wearing a brand-new pastel blue dress, swinging her legs happily as she dipped a strawberry into whipped cream. "Martha! Look, I made a strawberry snowman!"

Martha, the elderly head housekeeper, chuckled warmly, wiping a dab of cream from Lily’s cheek with a cloth napkin. "It's a very handsome snowman, little princess."

Claire sat beside her daughter, wearing a simple yet elegant emerald-green silk dress that Damiano had selected for her. The black-and-white uniform she had worn for years was gone forever, incinerated by Damiano’s orders the previous night. Her long auburn hair tumbled over her shoulders in loose, radiant waves. For the first time in seven years, the shadows of exhaustion beneath her eyes had begun to fade.

The heavy oak doors swung open.

Damiano walked in, dressed in a sharply tailored charcoal suit, his presence commanding yet serene. The hard, lethal edge that normally defined him seemed to melt the moment his eyes landed on Claire and Lily.

"Daddy!" Lily squealed, abandoning her plate and running down the length of the dining hall.

Damiano dropped to one knee, catching her effortlessly in his arms and lifting her high into the air. Lily giggled with delight as he spun her around before settling her securely against his hip.

"Good morning, my brave girl," Damiano said, kissing her cheek. "Did you sleep well?"

"I dreamed about the pony!" Lily beamed. "Are we still going to see him?"

"He's already in the stable," Damiano smiled. "A gentle white mare named Snowflake. She's waiting for you right now."

Lily gasped, her eyes shining with pure joy. "Can I go see her, Martha? Please?"

Martha looked to Damiano, who nodded with a fond smile. "Go on, sweetheart. Martha will take you."

Martha took Lily’s hand, leading the excited little girl through the French doors toward the sunny courtyard, leaving Damiano and Claire alone in the vast, quiet dining hall.

Damiano walked toward the table, his dark eyes never leaving Claire. He pulled out the chair beside her and sat down, leaning his arm on the table to look at her closely.

"You look breathtaking in green," he murmured, his deep voice sending a familiar shiver down her spine.

Claire looked down at the silk fabric, smiling softly. "It feels strange, Damiano. Yesterday I was serving coffee in this house, terrified that you would fire me. Today I'm sitting at your table wearing silk."

"You were never meant to serve, Claire," Damiano said, his hand reaching across the table to cover hers. His fingers were warm, strong, and completely steady. "You were meant to rule beside me. Seven years ago, I fell in love with a girl in an art gallery. I thought that love was dead, buried under blood and business. But having you back... seeing you with our daughter... I know I never stopped loving you."

Claire’s eyes shimmered with tears. She didn't pull her hand away. Instead, she turned her palm upward, interlacing her fingers with his. "I never stopped loving you either, Damiano. Even when I was terrified, even when I thought you had abandoned me... every time I looked at Lily's smile, I saw you. I loved you through her every single day."

Damiano leaned closer, his other hand coming up to gently cup her cheek, his thumb brushing across her soft skin. "Then stay with me, Claire. Not as my guest. Not just as Lily's mother. Stay as my wife."

Claire’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Your wife? Damiano... your world is so dangerous. Last night—"

"Last night was the end of the past," Damiano said fiercely, his dark eyes boring into hers with an intensity that burned away all doubt. "Marco Vance is in a hole he will never crawl out of. The council knows who you are, and they know that touching either of you means the complete destruction of their families. I have built an empire, Claire. But without you and Lily, it’s just a gilded cage. Marry me. Let me protect you openly, proudly, before the entire world."

Claire looked into his eyes—the eyes of the man who had brought a city to its knees just to keep her safe, the man who had melted the moment their daughter touched his hand.

"Yes," Claire whispered, a tear of pure joy spilling down her cheek. "Yes, Damiano. I'll marry you."

Damiano pulled her into his arms, crushing his lips against hers in a passionate, desperate kiss that sealed seven years of waiting into an unbreakable promise.
