Chapter 7 - the fortress stands

The siege at the south gate lasted less than four minutes. Damiano’s security force was not a collection of hired bodyguards; they were an elite, heavily trained paramilitary unit that operated with ruthless precision.
In the reinforced central control room on the ground floor, high-definition monitors displayed every corner of the perimeter. Three black SUVs had breached the outer gate, but they had been ambushed and neutralized before they could cross the secondary tree line.
Damiano stood in the center of the control room, his eyes scanning the camera feeds. Rafael walked in, wiping sweat from his brow, his dark suit slightly disheveled.
"It's over, Boss," Rafael reported. "Eight hostiles neutralized. Three in custody. None of our men were wounded."
"Who sent them?" Damiano asked, his voice deathly calm.
"Marco Vance," Rafael confirmed, tossing a confiscated satellite phone onto the console. "He didn't come to conquer. He was desperate. He realized we had identified his location in the city, and he knew you would hunt him down. He launched a diversionary strike hoping to draw you out into an ambush."
Damiano’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom. "Where is he?"
"An abandoned shipping warehouse by the river. Pier 42. He’s preparing to board a cargo freighter bound for South America tonight."
Damiano looked over his shoulder. In the adjoining private lounge, visible through reinforced glass, Claire sat on a leather sofa, holding Lily in her lap while reading her a fairy tale. Lily was calm, mesmerized by the pictures, completely insulated from the reality of the violence outside.
Claire looked up, meeting Damiano’s gaze through the glass. Her blue-green eyes were filled with unspoken emotion—fear, love, and a profound, silent plea for him to stay safe.
Damiano turned back to Rafael. "Prepare the convoy."
"Boss," Rafael said cautiously. "Let me take a strike team. You don't need to be there."
"Marco Vance stole seven years of my life," Damiano said, his deep voice vibrating with absolute finality. "He made the woman I love weep in the dark. He made my daughter grow up without a father. No one pulls the trigger on Marco but me."
Rafael bowed his head. "Understood. The vehicles are ready in the underground garage."
Damiano unbuckled his tactical vest, setting his rifle on the rack. He walked into the private lounge, pulling the heavy glass door shut behind him.
Lily looked up from the book, smiling brightly. "Daddy! Mommy says the prince fought the dragon and won."
Damiano crouched beside the sofa, reaching out to gently cup Lily’s cheek. "The prince always wins when he has a brave little princess to protect." He looked up at Claire, his gaze softening into something raw and unguarded. "I have to leave for an hour. Rafael will stay with you inside the vault. Nothing can penetrate those walls."
Claire reached out, catching his sleeve, her fingers curling around the fabric just as Lily had done the night before. "Damiano... don't let anger blind you. Come back to us. Lily just found her father. She can't lose you now."
Damiano leaned forward, his hand sliding behind Claire’s neck. He drew her in and pressed a fierce, lingering kiss against her lips. Claire gasped softly into the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck, pouring seven years of suppressed love, heartbreak, and longing into the contact.
When Damiano pulled back, his dark eyes burned with promise. "I will always come back to you, Claire. You are my home now."

He kissed Lily on the forehead, stood up, and walked out into the corridor without looking back.
Ten minutes later, four armored black Suburbans rolled out of the underground garage, slicing through the night toward Pier 42 like phantoms in the mist.
