Chapter 3 - shadows of chicago

Claire shut her eyes, the tears tracing warm lines down her fair cheeks. The memory of Chicago rushed back with terrifying clarity. Seven years ago, she had been an innocent art student, working part-time at an upscale gallery. Damiano had walked in one rainy afternoon, wearing a dark coat, quiet and mysterious. He hadn't introduced himself as the heir to the Verrone empire. To her, he had simply been Damiano—a brilliant, protective, intensely passionate man who made her feel safe.
For three months, they lived in a whirlwind of secret romance. Until the night men came for him.
She remembered the screeching tires, the armed men surrounding his penthouse, and the cold reality of who he truly was. The next morning, a high-ranking lieutenant—someone Damiano trusted implicitly at the time—arrived at her apartment with a bag of cash and a cold warning: *Damiano’s enemies know who you are. If you stay, he will choose between your life and his family. If you truly love him, disappear. If you don't, you won't survive the week.*
She had packed her things that very morning. Two weeks later, sitting alone in a small diner in Ohio, she had discovered she was pregnant.
"Claire," Damiano’s voice broke through the silence, softer now, laced with an agonizing vulnerability. "Tell me the truth."
Claire opened her eyes, looking directly into the dark irises of the only man she had ever loved. "Yes. Lily is your daughter."
Damiano flinched as if struck. His hands tightened into fists at his sides. The reality washed over him like a tidal wave. Six years. Six birthdays, first steps, first words, tears, laughter—six years of his own child's life, stolen by silence.
"Why?" Damiano’s voice cracked slightly, the composure of the untouchable boss fracturing completely. "Why didn't you tell me? Even if you feared my life, how could you keep my flesh and blood from me?"
"Because your men told me I was a liability!" Claire exclaimed, her voice rising in desperate defense. "Marco Vance came to my door! He told me that my presence would get you killed! He said you couldn't afford a weakness! I was twenty-four, Damiano! I was terrified, young, and pregnant with the child of a man who fought wars in the dark! What was I supposed to do?"
Damiano’s eyes widened with pure, lethal fury. "Marco Vance?"
"Yes! He gave me an envelope of money and told me to get out of the state before your enemies found me!"
"Marco Vance was a traitor," Damiano snarled, his voice dropping into a register of icy danger. "He was working for the Moretti family back then. Three weeks after you vanished, we found out he was selling information to our rivals. I thought he had eliminated you to hurt me." Damiano stepped even closer, his hand reaching out instinctively, hovering just inches from her cheek before dropping back. "Marco lied to you, Claire. He didn't want you safe. He wanted me vulnerable and distracted while he tried to orchestrate a coup."
Claire felt the ground give way beneath her feet. "What... what did you say?"
"I never authorized anyone to speak to you," Damiano said, his chest heaving with barely suppressed rage and profound regret. "When I came home and found your apartment empty, I almost tore the city apart stone by stone. I thought I had failed to protect you. And all this time... you thought I sent you away."
Claire covered her mouth with both hands, letting out a shattered sob. Seven years of running, seven years of working two jobs, living in cramped studio apartments, scrubbing floors to afford Lily’s asthma inhalers and ballet lessons—all because of a lie spun by a traitor.
"I didn't know," she wept. "Damiano, I swear I didn't know."
The door to the study opened softly. Rafael stepped in, holding a sleek black tablet. "Boss, the guests have departed. The perimeter is secure." He paused, noticing Claire’s tears and Damiano’s shattered expression. "Is everything alright?"
Damiano turned slowly. The vulnerability vanished, instantly replaced by the terrifying, focused authority of a leader on the warpath.
"Rafael," Damiano said evenly. "Prepare the master guest suite on the third floor. Claire and Lily are moving in immediately."
Rafael blinked, surprised, but his discipline held firm. "Right away, Boss."

"Wait," Claire panicked, shaking her head. "No, Damiano, we can't! People will talk. Your world... Lily is an innocent child. She doesn't belong in this world!"
"She is a Verrone," Damiano replied, his voice leaving no room for argument. "And as long as blood runs in my veins, no daughter of mine will ever sleep in servants' quarters again."
