Chapter 10 - a promise written in red

Six months later, the Verrone estate hosted the most anticipated event of the decade.

The grand ballroom was once again filled with hundreds of high-society guests, but the atmosphere was completely transformed. Gone was the cold, intimidating tension of the previous year’s gala. The hall was decorated with thousands of white roses, pale pink peonies, and cascading crystal ribbons. Soft, romantic orchestral music drifted through the air beneath the glowing chandeliers.

At the front of the room, standing beside a floral arch, Damiano Verrone looked out over the crowd. He was dressed in a tailored black tuxedo, but his face held none of the ruthless detachment of the past. His eyes were bright, watchful, and filled with profound anticipation.

Beside him stood Rafael, wearing a sharp suit with a white rose pinned to his lapel, his face split into a rare, genuine smile.

The orchestra shifted, playing a soaring, beautiful processional.

The double doors at the back of the hall swung wide open.

First came Lily. She was seven now, taller, her wavy brown hair styled in soft curls adorned with tiny white flowers. She wore an exquisite pale pink flower-girl dress with a long satin sash. In her hands, she carried a small silver basket, scattering pink rose petals along the white carpet with an enormous, proud grin on her face.

As Lily reached the altar, she didn't just throw petals—she ran the last few steps straight into Damiano’s open arms. Damiano scooped her up, laughing softly, before setting her gently beside Rafael.

"You look like a real prince today, Daddy," Lily whispered in his ear.

"And you are the most beautiful princess in the world," Damiano whispered back, kissing her forehead.

Then, the room fell into reverent silence as Claire Carter appeared at the entrance.

She was vision in pure ivory. Her wedding gown was a masterpiece of French lace and silk, trailing behind her in a dramatic, elegant train. Her auburn hair was styled into an intricate updo beneath a delicate veil, framing her rosy cheeks and radiant smile. She carried a bouquet of white peonies and blush roses, her eyes locked onto Damiano from the moment she took her first step down the aisle.

Damiano felt the air leave his lungs. The powerful mafia boss, the master of the empire, had to brace himself against the altar as his bride walked toward him.

Claire reached his side. Damiano stepped forward, gently lifting the sheer veil to reveal her radiant, tear-kissed face. He leaned in and whispered, "You are my whole world, Claire."

"And you are mine," she replied softly.

The vows were spoken with quiet reverence, witnessed by the city's most powerful families, who watched with newfound respect as Damiano Verrone pledged his life, his soul, and his empire to the woman he had loved across seven years of separation.

When the minister pronounced them husband and wife, Damiano wrapped his arms around Claire’s waist, pulling her flush against his chest and kissing her with an overwhelming, tender passion that drew a thunderous ovation from the crowd.

Later that evening, after the feast had been served and the guests were dancing beneath the chandeliers, Damiano stood by the tall arched windows overlooking the illuminated gardens. Claire walked up beside him, resting her head against his shoulder, her hand sliding into his.

Across the room, Lily was dancing with Rafael, giggling hysterically as the burly security chief clumsily tried to perform a waltz to make her laugh.

"Look at her," Claire whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "She's so happy, Damiano."

Damiano reached into the breast pocket of his tuxedo jacket. He pulled out an object, carefully preserved in a sleek leather case.

He opened it.

Inside lay the folded piece of paper from six months ago—the handmade card with the large, crooked heart drawn in bright red crayon.

Damiano traced the waxy red lines with his thumb, his dark eyes soft with eternal gratitude.

"She gave me this card asking to borrow a father for one day," Damiano said, turning to look at his beautiful wife. "She didn't know she was giving me back my life."

Claire looked up at him, her eyes reflecting the glowing chandeliers, tears of happiness catching the golden light. "You don't have to be borrowed anymore, Damiano. You're ours. Forever."

Damiano smiled, closing the case and placing it safely over his heart. He pulled Claire into his arms, kissing her softly beneath the crystal lights, finally home in the arms of the family he was born to protect.
