Chapter 5 - whispers in the empire

By mid-morning, the Verrone estate was alive with frantic, quiet energy. The private doctor, bound by strict confidentiality agreements, had already arrived, collected the buccal swabs from Damiano and Lily, and departed under armed escort to an exclusive laboratory.

Claire stood in the grand dressing room of the third-floor suite, staring at the wardrobe that had been delivered within hours. Racks of designer dresses, tailored cashmere coats, silk blouses, and fine leather shoes filled the room, alongside dozens of boxes containing dresses, toys, and books for Lily.

"Damiano, this is too much," Claire said as Damiano walked into the room, dressed in a sharp navy suit.

"It’s not enough," Damiano replied smoothly, watching Lily twirl in front of a mirror wearing a brand-new yellow sundress.

"Daddy, look!" Lily squealed, pointing at her shiny white shoes. "They don't have scuffs like my old ones!"

Damiano smiled, crouching down to her level. "Those are for playing in the garden. And this afternoon, we are going to get you a pony."

Lily gasped, her hands flying to her cheeks. "A real pony? Not a toy?"

"A real one. Stabled right here on the estate."

Claire shook her head, though she couldn't hide the warmth spreading through her chest. "You're going to spoil her rotten."

"She has six years of spoiling to catch up on," Damiano said without an ounce of regret.

A knock sounded at the open door. Rafael stood in the doorway, his face rigid. "Boss. We have a situation downstairs. The council members have gathered in the west parlor. Word travels fast. They heard rumors about what happened at the gala last night."

Damiano’s smile faded instantly. The protective mask slipped back into place. "Let them wait five minutes. I'll be down."

Rafael nodded and stepped back.

Claire stepped closer to Damiano, her eyes filled with worry. "The council? Are they angry?"

"They are curious, and curious men are dangerous," Damiano said, smoothing the lapels of his suit. "They want to know if I have developed a weakness."

"Are we a weakness?" Claire asked quietly.

Damiano caught her hand, lifting her fingers to his lips, pressing a warm kiss against her skin while holding her gaze. "You are my strength, Claire. And today, I am going to make that very clear."

Downstairs in the west parlor, five senior capos sat around an oval table. Among them was Lorenzo Moretti, the elder statesman of an allied faction, a man whose smile never reached his cold, calculating eyes.

When Damiano walked into the room, all five men stood up immediately out of respect. Damiano did not sit. He walked to the head of the table, placing his hands flat on the polished wood, looking at each of them in turn.

"I hear there are questions," Damiano began, his voice calm, measured, and cold.

Lorenzo cleared his throat, adjusting his gold cufflinks. "Damiano, we only seek clarity. Last night, hundreds of guests saw a servant's child disrupt the gala. We hear rumors that you've moved the housekeeper and her daughter into the master quarters. In our world, an unknown child with claims on the boss is... complicated. It invites leverage. It invites vulnerability."

"Is that what you think, Lorenzo?" Damiano asked, his tone deceptively mild.

"We need stability," another capo added. "If this is a romantic distraction, or worse, a setup by rivals—"

Damiano slammed his palm onto the table. The sharp crack echoed through the parlor like a gunshot. The five men flinched, falling dead silent.

"Claire Carter is not a distraction," Damiano spoke, every syllable dripping with icy venom. "And the girl is not a leverage point. Lily is my daughter. My blood. My heir."

Lorenzo’s eyes widened. "Your heir? Damiano, without formal proof, the family code—"

"The DNA results will arrive by sunset," Damiano interrupted, leaning forward until his face was inches from Lorenzo’s. "And when they do, anyone who looks at Claire or Lily with anything less than total reverence will answer directly to me. If anyone tries to use them, if anyone even breathes a threat in their direction, I will wipe their bloodline from this earth. Do I make myself entirely understood?"

A heavy silence smothered the room. The men exchanged uneasy, terrified glances before nodding in unison.

"Understood, Boss," Lorenzo whispered, lowering his gaze.

"Good," Damiano said, turning toward the door. "Now leave my house."

As the men scrambled out of the parlor, Rafael stepped up beside Damiano. "Boss, we have another problem."

Damiano rubbed his temples. "What is it?"

"We intercepted encrypted communications from the Chicago docks," Rafael said in a low voice. "Marco Vance... he wasn't eliminated seven years ago. He fled to Europe, but our sources say he slipped back into the country three days ago. He’s in this city."

Damiano’s eyes narrowed into slits of deadly intent. "Marco is here?"

"Yes. And if he finds out that Claire and the child are alive and under your roof... he knows his life is forfeit. A cornered rat will do anything."

Damiano stared out the window toward the courtyard, where he could see Claire sitting on a bench in the bright sunlight, watching Lily chase butterflies across the green grass.

"Double the perimeter guards," Damiano ordered ruthlessly. "No one enters or leaves the estate without my personal clearance. And find Marco Vance. Bring him to me alive."
