Chapter 10 - The Crest and the Promise

The air in the grand foyer was suffocatingly tense as night fell over the Greenwich estate. Outside, the rain poured in relentless sheets, lashing against the high stained-glass windows. Inside, two dozen armed men stood stationed along the perimeter, their weapons concealed but their postures ready for total war.

In the center of the foyer stood the delegation from the Moretti family—four heavily armed men in dark suits, led by a ruthless rival lieutenant named Dominic Moretti’s representative. They had come to exploit what they believed was a hidden weakness in the Cole empire.

Adrian Cole descended the grand staircase slowly, impeccably dressed in his tailored black suit, his dark tattoos peeking above his collar, his hands buried in his pockets. He radiated an immense, terrifying authority that made the visiting syndicate members visibly shift on their feet.

"You're far from home, Moretti," Adrian said, his deep baritone echoing through the marble hall. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't have my men throw you into the sound."

The rival representative stepped forward, a smug, cruel smile playing on his lips. "We came for the truth, Cole. Word on the street is that your late brother left behind an illegitimate child. An heir. A weakness. If the child exists, the treaty between our families regarding the northern territory is void."

Adrian reached the bottom of the stairs, stopping just three feet away from the rival lieutenant. His pale eyes were cold, unblinking, and filled with a lethal promise.

"You speak of my family in my house?" Adrian asked quietly, his voice dropping into a register that made every man in the room hold his breath.

At that exact moment, from the top of the grand staircase, came the soft, familiar sound of tiny footsteps.

"Uncle Adrian?" a sweet, high-pitched toddler voice called down.

The rival men whipped their heads around, looking up at the landing.

Nora stood at the top of the stairs, holding Emma’s hand tightly. She was wearing her bright yellow dress, her yellow bow, and around her neck gleamed the gold falcon pendant. In her right hand, she clutched her tiny yellow toy purse.

She looked down at the room full of armed, dangerous men. She didn't cry. She didn't hide. Instead, Nora threw her small shoulders back, rested her tiny chin on her curled fist in that exact, inherited stance, and narrowed her blue eyes at the rival lieutenant.

"You are too loud," Nora announced sternly into the silent foyer. "Handle it."

The rival lieutenant blinked in sheer, stunned disbelief.

Adrian let out a short, cold, satisfied dark smirk. He slowly reached into his suit jacket and pulled out James’s heavy silver lighter. He flicked the top open with a sharp, echoing clack, the flame illuminating the Cole family crest engraved on the polished metal.

He looked the rival lieutenant dead in the eye, the flame reflecting in his pale, lethal gaze.

"You want to know if my brother left behind an heir?" Adrian whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute, unyielding protection. "She is a Cole. She is my blood. And if anyone from your family ever steps foot on my property again, I will burn your empire to the ground."

Adrian flicked the lighter shut with a decisive snap, plunging the moment into a high-stakes, breathless standoff that promised a war for the future of the Cole dynasty.
