Chapter 6 - Words That Shatter Silence

Adrian reached out his large, calloused hand. His fingers, covered in dark ink and signet rings, trembled slightly as he gently picked up the heavy silver lighter from Nora’s palm.
The cold metal felt heavy in his grip. He turned it over in his hand, his sharp eyes scanning every millimeter of the antique silver.
Scratched crudely into the back casing, near the hinge, were two initials: J.C.
Directly beneath the initials was a date engraved in tiny numbers: 10-14-2022.
Adrian’s heart slammed against his ribs with the force of a sledgehammer. October 14, 2022. That was precisely four weeks before James had died. And it was roughly nine months before Nora Hayes was born.
Adrian’s breath hitched in his chest. His mind, sharp and analytical, began connecting dots at a terrifying speed. The blond-brown hair. The blue eyes. The fearless demeanor. The exact, inherited physical habit of resting her chin on her curled fist. The date on the lighter.
He slowly looked up from the silver lighter, his pale, piercing eyes fixing onto the innocent face of the three-year-old girl sitting in front of him.
"Nora," Adrian spoke, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all playfulness, vibrating with a dark, intense gravity. "Who gave you this lighter?"
Nora blinked her large blue eyes, completely unbothered by the sudden intensity of the towering man. She turned her curly head, raised her small arm, and pointed her tiny finger directly across the grand marble foyer toward the service corridor.
She pointed straight at Emma.
"Mommy says Daddy gave it to me," Nora said innocently, her sweet toddler voice echoing with absolute clarity through the dead silence of the hall. "She says Daddy is in the stars, but he left his shiny box for me to keep."
The words hung in the air like a lethal sentence.
Emma went completely, ghostly pale. The world seemed to tilt beneath her feet. The feather duster lay forgotten on the floor. Her hands shook violently against her pink maid dress, and her eyes locked onto Adrian’s with a look of pure, unadulterated terror.
Adrian slowly rose from his crouch. He stood up to his full, broad-shouldered height, towering over the foyer like a dark storm cloud. He held the silver lighter tightly in his fist, his knuckles turning white, his dark tattoos pulsing as his jaw muscles clenched in supreme, overwhelming shock.

He turned his body slowly, his polished black leather shoes clicking loudly against the marble as he turned his gaze toward Emma.
