Chapter 7 - Interrogation in the Shadow

The heavy oak doors of Adrian Cole’s private study slammed shut with a deep, echoing thud that vibrated through the floorboards. The study was a vast, wood-paneled sanctuary filled with floor-to-ceiling leather-bound books, dark mahogany furniture, and amber lamps that cast long, dramatic shadows across the room. Outside, the rain had begun to fall, lashing softly against the massive glass windows overlooking the estate's grounds.

Inside, the silence was suffocating.

Nora had been taken upstairs by a senior nanny, blissfully unaware of the storm she had just unleashed, carrying her yellow toy purse and clutching a glass of warm milk.

Downstairs, in the private study, Emma stood near the center of the room, her hands tightly clasped over her pale-pink apron. She looked fragile, her soft blonde-brown hair slipping slightly from her updo, her fair skin completely drained of color.

Adrian stood behind his massive mahogany desk, his back turned to her, staring out at the rain. He had removed his black suit jacket, standing in his open-collar black dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up to reveal the dense tattoos covering his muscular forearms. In his right hand, he held the silver lighter, flipping the top open and closed with a sharp, rhythmic clack-click, clack-click.

Clack-click.

"Three years," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, a low, gravelly baritone that chilled Emma to her very core. "You have worked in my house for three years, Emma."

"Mr. Cole... please," Emma whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "I can explain—"

"Silence," Adrian commanded. He didn't yell, but the sheer weight of his voice cut her off instantly.

He slowly turned around to face her. His ruggedly handsome face was an unreadable mask of dark intensity. He set the silver lighter down on the polished mahogany desk between them with a sharp thud.

"James died three years ago in a staged car accident on Route 9," Adrian said, stepping out from behind the desk, his long, deliberate strides bringing him closer to her. "I spent six months hunting down the men responsible. I tore the city apart to avenge my brother. And all the while, his child was living under my roof, wearing a pink maid's daughter dress, calling another man's memory a star in the sky."

Adrian stopped just two feet away from Emma. His broad, muscular frame loomed over her, his pale eyes burning with a mix of fury, betrayal, and profound shock.

"Why?" Adrian demanded, his voice dropping into a deadly growl. "Why did you hide James’s child from me?"

Emma looked up at him, tears finally spilling over her lashes, tracing paths down her rosy, pale cheeks. She didn't shrink away. The fear was there, raw and terrifying, but beneath it was the fierce, unyielding instinct of a mother protecting her child.

"Because I was terrified of you, Adrian!" Emma cried softly, her voice trembling with raw truth. "Look at you! Look at this life! You live in a world of guns, blood, rivalries, and sudden death! James was different. James was gentle. He wanted out of this family!"
