Chapter 3 - The Laughter of a Titan

Nora turned on her heel, preparing to continue her executive march toward the grand double doors of the dining room. She puffed out her chest, raised her chin high, and took three exaggerated, highly commanding strides across the marble floor.

However, three-year-old physics caught up with her corporate ambition.

On her fourth step, the tip of her tiny yellow shoe caught the trailing end of Adrian’s oversized black silk tie. Nora stumbled forward, her little arms windmilling furiously in the air as she lost her balance. She pitched forward, landing in a soft, harmless heap right in the middle of the Persian rug, her yellow toy purse clattering beside her.

Emma’s heart leaped into her throat. She took a frantic step out from behind the pillar, ready to rush forward, but stopped dead in her tracks.

Nora didn't cry. She didn't whimper. Instead, the little girl sat up slowly, shook her curly blonde hair out of her eyes, and adjusted her yellow bow. With a look of supreme, ridiculous dignity, she picked up her toy purse, dusted off her dress, pulled the oversized tie out from beneath her knees, and straightened her back as if the entire fall had been a planned, tactical maneuver.

Suddenly, a heavy, polished black leather shoe stepped into the top of the grand staircase.

The entire foyer went deathly cold. The four guards snapped to absolute attention, their spines stiffening, their eyes locking straight ahead. Emma froze, her pale face turning completely white.

Adrian Cole descended the stairs.

He moved with the effortless, predatory grace of an apex predator. His broad chest was visible beneath his open-collar black dress shirt, the dark ink of his chest tattoos tracing up toward his neck. His light stubble framed a face that was usually an unreadable mask of cold, lethal calculation. He had his hands buried loosely in the pockets of his tailored black trousers, his platinum wristwatch glinting under the chandelier light.

Adrian stopped at the landing, his pale eyes sweeping over the foyer. He saw his guards standing like statues. He saw Emma cowering by the pillar. And then, his eyes landed on the center of the Persian rug.

He stared at the tiny three-year-old girl sitting on his antique rug, wearing his eight-hundred-dollar Italian silk tie, clutching a plastic purse, and staring right back at him with an expression of unyielding authority.

Silence stretched across the foyer like a stretched piano wire. Every person in the room braced for the inevitable explosion of temper.

Then, the impossible happened.

Adrian Cole’s sharp jaw relaxed. His pale eyes crinkled at the corners. His chest expanded, and from deep within his throat came a loud, rich, genuine burst of laughter.

It was not a quiet chuckle. It was a booming, deeply masculine, wholehearted laugh that echoed off the high marble ceilings and resonated through the vast corridors of the estate. It was a sound none of the guards had heard in nearly five years—not since before the tragic death of Adrian’s younger brother, James.

Every guard in the room froze in absolute, speechless shock. Marcus’s mouth parted slightly. Emma stood paralyzed, her hand resting over her racing heart, staring at her employer as if he had transformed into a stranger before her very eyes.
