Chapter 4 - Ghosts in the Stance

Adrian’s laughter tapered off into a warm, amused smile—a rare, mesmerizing sight that completely transformed his rugged, intimidating face. He glided down the remaining marble steps, his polished black shoes making no sound, and walked straight toward the center of the foyer.
He stopped a foot away from Nora and slowly dropped down into a low crouch. The broad muscles of his thighs strained against his black trousers as he brought his imposing, towering frame down to eye level with the toddler. A faint scent of expensive cedarwood, leather, and dark tobacco drifted off him.
"So," Adrian said, his deep baritone voice smooth and surprisingly gentle, carrying his natural Connecticut accent. "I hear you've been running my estate this morning."
Nora didn't flinch. She looked at the giant man crouched in front of her, her blue eyes wide and curious. She reached up with a tiny hand, gently adjusting the massive black tie hanging around her neck.
"I am very busy," Nora informed him gravely. "I have meetings."
Adrian’s smile widened, a genuinely soft expression lighting up his dark features. "Is that so? And I suppose you needed my tie for these very important meetings?"
"Yes," Nora nodded solemnly. "It makes me look like a boss."
"Well, you certainly look the part," Adrian murmured, leaning forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees.
Then, as he watched her, Nora shifted her tiny weight. She lifted her right arm, curled her small fingers into a loose fist, and rested her chin squarely upon her knuckle, tilting her head slightly to the left while staring at him with a quiet, observant intensity.
It was a small, subtle gesture. An unscripted micro-expression.
Across the foyer, behind the marble pillar, Emma’s breath caught violently in her throat. Her hand flew to her mouth, her eyes widening in pure, unadulterated terror. Blood drained entirely from her face, leaving her fair skin as pale as fresh snow.
That stance. That exact, specific physical habit—resting the chin on a curled fist while tilting the head to the left during a conversation—did not belong to Adrian. Adrian sat straight, rigid, and dominant, resting his chin on his open palm or crossing his massive arms.
The chin-on-fist gesture belonged to James Cole.
James, Adrian’s late younger brother, had possessed that exact same quirk. Whenever James was being playful, whenever he was listening to someone he cared about, he would rest his chin on his curled fist and tilt his head. It was a unique, inherited mannerism that James had carried his entire life until the night he died three years ago.
Adrian stayed crouched, his smile remaining intact, but his pale eyes narrowed slightly as he stared at Nora's posture. A faint, distant shadow of memory flickered across his face, a sudden, inexplicable sense of familiarity washing over him. He didn't understand why, but looking at this little girl in this exact moment felt like looking at a ghost.

"Where did you learn to sit like that, little one?" Adrian asked softly, his voice dropping an octave as he studied her rosy features, the shape of her blue eyes, and the golden blonde curls spilling over her shoulders.
Nora dropped her hand, blinking innocently. "I just do it."
