Chapter 9 - The Gathering Storm

The revelation of Nora’s true parentage changed everything within the walls of the Greenwich estate. But in the world Adrian Cole inhabited, secrets were dangerous commodities, and peace was a luxury that rarely lasted.

By the following evening, the atmosphere in the mansion had shifted dramatically. Adrian had quietly reassigned Emma from her housekeeping duties, moving her and Nora from the small staff quarters into the luxurious guest suite in the east wing of the estate.

Emma sat on the plush velvet sofa in the private suite, watching Nora play on the thick rug. Nora was happily lining up her toy cars, still wearing her bright yellow dress, entirely oblivious to the monumental shift in her reality.

A heavy knock sounded at the door, and Adrian stepped inside. He had traded his black shirt for a clean, tailored dark suit, his dark hair immaculate, his presence as commanding as ever. But his pale eyes held a subtle, protective warmth whenever they landed on the little girl.

"Adrian," Emma said, standing up nervously. "You shouldn't be doing this. The staff... the guards... they are starting to ask questions. They don't understand why the housekeeper's child is in the main wing."

"Let them ask," Adrian replied coldly, walking into the room. "This is my house. I answer to no one."

He dropped down to one knee beside Nora, pulling a small, velvet-lined box from his jacket pocket. Nora looked up, her blue eyes sparkling with delight.

"What's that?" Nora asked eagerly.

Adrian opened the box, revealing a delicate gold chain necklace with a tiny pendant shaped like a falcon. "It belonged to your father," Adrian said softly, his deep voice carrying an absolute, fatherly tenderness. "I want you to wear it."

Nora held out her neck proudly as Adrian gently fastened the chain around her collar. She lifted the golden falcon pendant in her tiny hand, her eyes wide. "It's pretty. Like a bird."

"It means you are protected," Adrian told her, brushing a blonde curl from her forehead. "It means no one in this world can ever harm you."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the suite were pushed open. Marcus, Adrian’s chief enforcer, stepped into the room, his face pale, his hand resting tightly on his holster.

"Boss," Marcus said, his voice laced with urgent panic. "We have a situation at the main gates. The Moretti family from New York just arrived with a six-car motorcade. They're demanding an immediate sit-down."

Adrian stood up slowly, his ruggedly handsome face hardening back into a mask of pure, lethal steel. "The Morettis? On what grounds?"

"They claim they tracked a lead regarding James’s death," Marcus reported grimly. "They say they know James had a child before he died... and they want to verify if the heir to the Cole family is inside this house."
