Chapter 2

Adrian did not flinch. The moment Clara’s trembling voice spoke those two words, the atmosphere around the table transformed into a razor-sharp tactical environment. Adrian shifted his posture, his broad-shouldered frame shielding Clara from the direct line of sight through the restaurant’s plate-glass window.
His dark eyes flicked upward toward Marco, who had already followed the little girl's terrified gaze.
"Marco," Adrian commanded in a low, dangerous rumble that barely carried past their table. "Target across the street. Tan overcoat, fake-fur collar, paper coffee cup. Left shoe marked with a scratch."
Marco’s hand slipped inside his dark suit jacket, his rugged face turning to stone. "I see him, Boss. He’s standing on the north corner. He isn't drinking from that cup—he’s holding an earpiece line against his collar."
Across the street, the man in the tan overcoat noticed Adrian's commanding presence standing beside the girl. The stranger's cold eyes narrowed, a dark, calculating expression crossing his ordinary face. Slowly, deliberately, he lowered his coffee cup and slipped his right hand inside the lining of his tan overcoat.
"He's reaching," Marco growled softly, stepping laterally to cover Adrian's flank. "Should I take him out here?"
"No," Adrian ordered flatly. "Too many civilians. We don't bring gunfire around the child."
Adrian looked down at Clara. The seven-year-old girl was shaking, clutching her white plush bunny against her pale-yellow floral dress, but her big brown eyes remained fixed on Adrian, trusting him completely. Adrian reached down with his right hand, wrapping his calloused, tattooed fingers gently around her small hand.
"Clara," Adrian spoke, his voice smooth, steady, and commanding absolute calm. "Look at me. Do not look at the window."
Clara immediately snapped her eyes back to his face, nodding with impressive discipline.
"Good girl," Adrian said gently. He looked at Marco. "Have the motorcade bring the armored SUV directly to the private alley exit behind the kitchen. We move now."
Marco pressed his earpiece, barking rapid, hushed commands into his comms unit. "Alpha Team, bring the package to the rear service bay. Secure the perimeter. We have an active scout on the target."
Adrian stood up to his full, imposing height. With fluid, effortless strength, he scooped Clara up into his left arm, nestling her safely against his broad chest. Her tiny arms wrapped around his neck, her floppy-eared plush bunny pressed between them. Adrian’s black fitted shirt flexed as he adjusted his grip, his gold-and-black watch catching the warm light of the chandeliers.
He walked swiftly through the restaurant’s private service corridor, past stunned kitchen staff, his heavy black leather shoes striking the floor in a rhythmic, unhurried cadence. Marco moved half a step ahead, his sidearm drawn and kept low against his leg.
They burst through the heavy steel rear doors into the shaded alleyway just as two black, armored SUVs screeched to a halt on the cobblestones. The rear door of the primary vehicle swung open, and two heavily armed bodyguards in dark suits formed a physical wedge around Adrian and Clara.
Adrian placed Clara carefully into the leather back seat, sliding in right beside her before Marco slammed the heavy, bulletproof door shut. The engine roared to life, and the armored SUV accelerated out of the alleyway, tires screaming against the asphalt.
Inside the quiet, climate-controlled cabin of the vehicle, Clara let out a long, shuddering breath. She sat on the wide leather seat, her pale-yellow floral dress slightly rumpled, her small yellow ribbons catching the dim interior lights.
Adrian unbuttoned his cuffs, rolling his sleeves up his muscular forearms, revealing the full extent of his black ink tattoos. He turned his piercing dark eyes toward the little girl.
"You're safe now, Clara," Adrian said, his deep baritone filling the cabin. "Nobody touches you while you are in my care. But if our contract is going to hold, you need to tell me everything."
Clara looked up at him, her delicate face serious as she adjusted the pale-yellow ribbon around her waist. She held her white plush bunny on her lap, gently smoothing its floppy pink ears.
"My mother told me about you," Clara whispered softly, her sweet voice carrying a staggering weight. "She said if she ever disappeared... if bad men came for her... I had to find Chicago’s Black Dragon. The man with dark tattoos and a gold watch who never breaks his word."

Adrian went dead still, his jaw tightening as his eyes burned into hers. "Your mother? What is her name, Clara?"
"Eleanor," Clara answered, her voice trembling slightly for the first time. "Eleanor Vance. And two days ago, three men took her from our home."
