Chapter 9

By two o'clock in the morning, the freezing rain over Chicago had stopped, leaving the night air crisp, clear, and quiet.
A fleet of black armored SUVs glided back through the iron gates of the Moretti estate. The red emergency lights inside the mansion had been reset, replaced by the warm, golden glow of the grand chandeliers illuminating the marble foyer.
Adrian walked through the front doors, carrying a warm wool coat over his arm. Beside him walked Eleanor Vance. Though exhausted and pale, she walked with her head held high, her eyes searching frantically for the daughter she had feared she would never see again.
Standing near the base of the grand marble staircase was Marco, flanked by two household staff members.
And sitting on the third step of the staircase, holding her white plush bunny tightly against her pale-yellow floral dress, was seven-year-old Clara. Her messy golden bun was still held together by her pale-yellow ribbons, her big brown eyes wide with watchful anticipation.
The moment Clara saw Eleanor step through the doorway, her small face lit up with a brilliant, radiant joy.
"MOMMY!" Clara shrieked, her sweet voice echoing happily off the high marble ceilings.
She dropped her plush bunny onto the step and scrambled down the stairs as fast as her small yellow boots could carry her.
Eleanor let out a broken, joyful sob, dropping to her knees on the marble floor with her arms open wide. Clara threw her small body into her mother's embrace, wrapping her tiny arms tightly around Eleanor's neck, burying her golden curls against her mother's shoulder.
Both mother and daughter wept openly, holding onto each other in the middle of the grand foyer, locked in a fierce, desperate embrace that erased two days of terrifying nightmare.
Adrian stood a few paces back, his broad arms crossed over his chest, his gold-and-black watch gleaming under the chandelier light. He watched the emotional reunion in silence, a rare, profound warmth filling his ruthless heart. The dark world of blood, violence, and territory he had ruled for nineteen years seemed distant and trivial compared to the simple, absolute truth of the moment before him.
Marco walked up beside Adrian, looking at the mother and child with a quiet, genuine smile on his rugged face.
"Federal agents just raided Sterling’s Oak Brook estate, Boss," Marco reported softly. "Sterling and his remaining lieutenants are in custody. The evidence from the memory card is rock-solid. Sterling will spend the rest of his life in a federal prison."
"Good," Adrian murmured, his dark eyes never leaving Clara. "Ensure Eleanor’s legal team has full access to our private investigators to clear her name completely."
"Already done, Boss," Marco nodded respectfully.
After several long minutes, Eleanor stood up, holding Clara securely in her arms. She walked over to Adrian, stopping two feet away from the formidable Mafia boss.
Eleanor looked into his piercing dark eyes, her delicate face filled with a depth of gratitude that words could barely express.
"Mr. Moretti," Eleanor said, her voice trembling with emotion. "I don't know how I can ever repay you. You saved my life, you destroyed the men who hunted us, and you protected my daughter when she had nowhere else to turn."
May you like
Adrian looked at Eleanor, then down at Clara, who was looking up at him with a bright, triumphant smile, still holding her plush bunny.
"You don't owe me anything, Eleanor," Adrian said gently, his deep baritone soft and sincere. "Your daughter already paid for my services."
