Chapter 3

The armored SUV glided through the wrought-iron gates of the Moretti estate, a sprawling limestone fortress nestled on fifty acres of private, heavily wooded land in the northern suburbs of Chicago. High concrete walls topped with razor wire, state-of-the-art thermal cameras, and heavily armed security teams patrolled the perimeter. To the underworld, it was an impenetrable sanctuary; to Adrian, it was home.

The vehicle brought them to a smooth stop beneath the grand stone portico. Marco opened the rear door, scanning the driveway before offering a respectful nod. Adrian stepped out, holding Clara’s small hand in his as they walked into the grand foyer.

The interior of the mansion was breathtaking—sweeping marble staircases, soaring ceilings, and warm golden light illuminating priceless oil paintings. Yet despite the imposing grandeur, Adrian made sure to match his strides to Clara’s small, wobbly steps.

"Marco," Adrian commanded as they entered the grand study. "Establish a Level-One lockdown across the entire estate. Bring in four additional perimeter teams. No one enters or leaves these grounds without my personal code."

"Understood, Boss," Marco replied, stepping into the hallway to coordinate with the security detail.

Adrian led Clara toward a plush leather sofa near a crackling stone fireplace. He gestured for her to sit, and the seven-year-old girl carefully climbed up, resting her white plush bunny beside her pale-yellow floral dress. She looked around the vast room with cautious, intelligent eyes, taking in the towering mahogany bookshelves, the antique desk, and the heavy velvet drapes.

Adrian walked over to a side table, poured a glass of warm milk, and set it gently on the coffee table in front of her. He pulled up an armchair directly opposite her, leaning his broad forearms on his knees, bringing his dark, tattooed frame down to her level.

"Eleanor Vance," Adrian repeated softly, his deep voice rich with quiet focus. "Your mother is an investigative auditor for the city's financial commission."

Clara picked up the glass with both hands, taking a tiny sip before setting it back down. She looked directly into Adrian’s piercing eyes. "She found something bad, Mr. Moretti. She found out that a very powerful man was stealing millions of dollars from the city’s hospital fund."

Adrian’s sharp jawline set like concrete. "Don Richard Sterling."

Clara nodded slowly. "Mom knew they were coming for her. Two nights ago, she hid me in the secret pantry under our kitchen floor. I heard breaking glass, and then men with cold voices took her away. Before she went, she gave me this bunny and told me to run to Ristorante Lucca because you always eat lunch there on Thursdays."

Adrian reached into his black dress shirt pocket, pulling out the crumpled twenty-dollar bill Clara had given him. He unfolded it carefully against his knee, staring at the worn green paper.

He knew Eleanor Vance by reputation. She was a woman of fierce integrity who had spent three years investigating the financial web of Don Richard Sterling—a ruthless, aging syndicate leader who controlled the South Side docks and ran corrupt land schemes across Illinois. Sterling was Adrian’s primary rival, a man who believed money and intimidation could buy absolute immunity.

"She gave you twenty dollars," Adrian murmured, looking up at Clara.

"She told me never to ask a powerful man for a favor," Clara explained, her rosy cheeks dimpling slightly as she straightened her messy golden bun. "She said favors are debts you can never pay back. But if I paid you, it would be a real contract. And a real man honors his business."

A rare, faint smile touched the corner of Adrian’s stubbled mouth. He looked at the seven-year-old girl with immense respect. Eleanor Vance had raised a child with the mind of a strategist and the heart of a lion.

"Your mother was right," Adrian said quietly. "A contract with Adrian Moretti is unbreakable."

Before Clara could answer, the double oak doors of the study swung open. Marco stepped into the room, holding an encrypted tablet, his rugged face dark with urgent news.

"Boss," Marco said, his voice tense. "Our facial recognition network just picked up the man in the tan overcoat. His name is Gregory Vance—no relation to Eleanor. He’s a former military contractor, now working as Sterling’s chief enforcer."

Adrian stood up slowly, his tall, muscular frame radiating a lethal, terrifying authority. "Where is he?"

"He vanished into the downtown subway system after we left the restaurant," Marco reported. "But we intercepted a coded transmission originating from Sterling’s private estate in Oak Brook. Sterling knows the girl escaped, and he knows she’s with you."

Adrian walked over to his desk, picking up a gold fountain pen. He folded the crumpled twenty-dollar bill neatly and placed it inside a small leather display box on his desk, clicking the lock shut.

"Sterling thinks he can hunt a child in my city," Adrian growled, his deep voice vibrating with absolute, protective fury. "Tell the vanguard to mobilize. We aren't just protecting Clara for twenty-four hours, Marco. We are going to dismantle Richard Sterling’s entire empire."
