Chapter 8

The interior of Pier 42 was a sprawling labyrinth of stacked wooden crates, rusty machinery, and towering steel girders. The blaring alarm sirens echoed off the corrugated metal walls, mixed with the distant thunder of gunfire from the north side where Team Alpha was engaging Sterling's outer guard.

Adrian moved through the shadow-drenched aisles with fluid, feline precision, his sidearm raised, his dark eyes scanning every catwalk and crossbeam above. Marco followed two paces behind, covering his flank with a suppressed submachine gun.

They reached the iron staircase leading up to the second-floor office bay. Two mercenaries dressed in raincoats stood at the top of the landing, frantically scanning the lower floor with flashlights.

Before the men could raise their rifles, Adrian fired twice in rapid, silent succession.

BANG! BANG!

The suppressed rounds struck both guards cleanly, sending them tumbling over the railing onto the concrete floor below.

Adrian bounded up the stairs three at a time, his polished boots striking the metal steps. He reached the second-floor corridor, kicking open the heavy wooden door of the central office bay.

Inside the dimly lit room, tied securely to a wooden chair with heavy ropes, was Eleanor Vance.

She was a breathtaking woman in her mid-thirties, with long golden-blonde hair and delicate facial features that mirrored Clara's exactly. Her clothes were disheveled, a faint bruise marking her cheekbone, but her expressive brown eyes burned with incredible, unbroken courage as she looked up at the doorway.

Standing beside her, holding a silver handgun pressed against her temple, was Don Richard Sterling—a seventy-year-old, white-haired syndicate boss in a soiled pinstripe suit, his face pale with frantic terror. Beside Sterling stood Gregory Vance, his shoulder bandaged, holding an automatic shotgun with a trembling grip.

"Don't move, Moretti!" Sterling screamed, his voice hoarse and hysterical over the blaring alarms. "Step back or I put a bullet through her head! I'll destroy everything!"

Adrian stepped into the room, stopping ten feet away. His tall, broad-shouldered frame completely dominated the doorway, his black dress shirt soaked with rain, his dark tattoos prominent against his skin under the buzzing fluorescent light. His piercing dark eyes locked onto Sterling with a cold, terrifying detachment that made the old mobster shudder.

"You're out of moves, Sterling," Adrian said, his deep baritone vibrating through the room. "Your financial ledgers are already on the Federal Prosecutor’s desk. Your outer guards are dead. And your contract on Clara Vance has failed."

At the mention of her daughter's name, Eleanor Vance gasped, tears welling in her brown eyes. "Clara... my baby... is she—"

"She is safe, Eleanor," Adrian interrupted gently, his eyes briefly softening as he looked at the mother. "She hired me to protect her. And she paid in full."

Sterling’s eyes widened in insane disbelief. "Paid you?! She's a seven-year-old child!"

"She has more honor in her small finger than you have in your entire bloodline," Adrian growled softly.

In a split second, Gregory Vance raised his shotgun toward Adrian. But before the enforcer could pull the trigger, Marco fired a rapid three-round burst from the doorway, striking Vance through the chest and dropping him instantly to the floor.

Sterling panicked, screaming as he jerked his gun toward Eleanor, but Adrian closed the ten-foot distance in a heartbeat.

Adrian grabbed Sterling’s wrist with bone-crushing force, twisting the old man's arm until a loud CRACK echoed through the office. The silver gun clattered to the floor. Adrian drove his heavy, tattooed fist directly into Sterling’s jaw, sending the corrupt syndicate leader crashing unconscious against the filing cabinets.

The room fell into an absolute, ringing silence.

Adrian unholstered a tactical knife, stepping over to Eleanor Vance. With two swift, precise cuts, he severed the heavy ropes binding her wrists and ankles.

Eleanor collapsed forward, but Adrian caught her gently in his broad arms, supporting her weight effortlessly. She looked up into the sharp, handsome face of Chicago’s most feared Mafia boss, seeing not a monster, but the savior who had protected her child.

"Thank you..." Eleanor sobbed, clutching his broad chest. "Thank you... my God... Clara..."

"She's waiting for you at my estate, Eleanor," Adrian said softly, his voice rich with genuine warmth. "Let's take you home."
