Chapter 10

The sun rose over Chicago the following morning, casting a brilliant golden light across the estate's manicured gardens and snow-dusted pine trees.
Inside the private study, the warm daylight streamed through the vaulted windows, illuminating the rich mahogany bookshelves, the plush leather sofa, and the heavy antique desk.
Sitting behind the desk in his broad leather armchair was Adrian Moretti. He wore a fresh, fitted black dress shirt, unbuttoned at the top, his dark brown hair swept back impeccably, his sharp jawline smooth.
On his desk sat a small, custom-made glass display case. Inside, resting flat against red velvet, was the crumpled twenty-dollar bill Clara had handed him in the restaurant twenty-four hours earlier.
A soft knock sounded at the open double doors.
Eleanor Vance stood in the doorway, dressed in a soft cream sweater and trousers provided by the estate staff. She held Clara’s hand. Clara wore a fresh pale-yellow floral dress, her golden-blonde hair styled in her signature messy bun with yellow ribbons and tiny white flowers, clutching her white plush bunny with floppy pink ears.
"Come in," Adrian invited, setting down his fountain pen.
Eleanor and Clara walked into the warm study. Clara immediately let go of her mother's hand, stepping forward on her small yellow boots until she reached the side of Adrian's heavy desk. She looked at the glass display case holding her twenty-dollar bill, her big brown eyes sparkling with delight.
"You framed my money!" Clara cheered, her sweet voice ringing out happily.
"Of course I did," Adrian replied, a warm, handsome smile touching his sharp features. "It is the most valuable payment I have ever received in nineteen years of business."
Eleanor walked up beside her daughter, looking at Adrian with deep respect. "Our apartment downtown has been cleared by the police, Mr. Moretti. The federal prosecutor assured us that the threat is completely gone. We are leaving for my sister's house in Boston this afternoon to start over."
Adrian stood up slowly to his full, towering height. He walked around the desk, stopping in front of the mother and child.
"You are safe anywhere in this country, Eleanor," Adrian said, his deep voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable authority. "But if you ever need anything... if anyone in this city ever threatens either of you again... you know where to find me."
Eleanor reached out, taking his broad, tattooed hand in both of hers, squeezing it tightly. "Thank you, Adrian. For everything."
Clara stepped forward, wrapping her tiny arms around Adrian’s leg, burying her face against his tailored trousers. Adrian dropped down to one knee, wrapping his large, tattooed arm around the seven-year-old girl, holding her close for a quiet, affectionate moment.
Clara pulled back slightly, looking directly into his piercing dark eyes with her bright brown ones.
"Did I pick the right man for the contract, Mr. Moretti?" Clara asked softly, her rosy cheeks dimpling with a proud smile.
Adrian looked at her—at her innocence, her fierce bravery, and the incredible bond they had forged over twenty-four hours—and felt a profound sense of fulfillment he had never known in his dark empire.
"You picked the best man, Clara," Adrian answered gently, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "And the contract is fulfilled."
Clara giggled, pressing the floppy pink ear of her plush bunny against his check before taking her mother's hand once more.

Adrian stood and walked them out to the grand portico, where Marco had prepared a private motorcade to escort them safely to the airport. He watched as Clara waved goodbye through the tinted window of the SUV, her pale-yellow ribbons fluttering as the vehicle glided down the long driveway toward the iron gates.
As the motorcade disappeared into the sunlit morning, Adrian turned back toward his mansion. The dark, cold underworld of Chicago still awaited his ruthless command, but as he walked back into his study and looked at the framed twenty-dollar bill resting on his desk, Chicago’s most feared Mafia boss knew that his heart had been changed forever by a seven-year-old girl and a floppy-eared plush bunny.
