Chapter 24 - Ellie chooses when to learn more

For nearly a year, Ellie did not ask much about Nathaniel.
Then one day:
“Does he have brown hair?”
“Yes.”
“Like me?”
“Somewhat.”
“Does he know I exist?”
“Yes.”
“Is that weird?”
“Probably for everyone.”
She laughed.
Then:
“Can I see picture?”
We spoke with her therapist first.
Not because a photo was dangerous.
Because I refused to improvise around her identity again.
We showed her a current photograph Nathaniel had consented to share.
Ellie studied it.
Then looked at me.
“We have same eyebrows.”
“You might.”
“You jealous?”
There it was.
I answered carefully.
“No.”
She narrowed her eyes.
“A little?”
Maybe.
Human beings are allowed complicated feelings.
“A little strange, maybe.”
She hugged me.
“Still Daddy.”
May you like
I smiled.
“Still.”
