Chapter 4 - Why Ellie did not know yet

People hear “secret” and assume shame.

It was not shame.

Camille and I had agreed to tell Ellie in an age-appropriate way.

We had already begun.

She knew:

A doctor helped Mommy and Daddy have her.

She knew families could be made in different ways.

She did not yet know the full donor identity.

Her child therapist and pediatrician had both advised us:

Do not turn disclosure into one dramatic revelation.

Build understanding gradually.

That had always been the plan.

After Camille died, I kept it.

Nathaniel himself had never asked to enter our lives.

He had followed the donor agreement.

We had exchanged one medically relevant update through the clinic after Ellie was born.

Nothing more.

So when Sabine said:

“I’ll tell her who her real father is,”

she was not revealing an affair.

She was threatening to weaponize a child’s origin story before she was ready.

That made me colder than any threat against my money.
