Chapter 6 - What was in the gift

The damaged box belonged to Camille’s sister Rebecca.
Inside was:
A small music box.
Camille had bought it shortly before her final hospitalization.
She asked Rebecca to save it until Ellie’s eighth birthday.
When opened, it played the same lullaby Camille used to sing.
There was also a letter.
Not about Nathaniel.
Not about fertility treatment.
Just a mother writing to a daughter she knew she might not see grow up.
Ellie read it later.
The final line said:

You never have to earn your place in the family that loves you.
After everything Sabine said that afternoon, the sentence felt almost impossible.
