Chapter 16 - CONRAD AND ME

Conrad and I were not close after the incident.

Then slowly we became something else.

Not brothers.

Not enemies.

Cousins who had finally stopped pretending every disagreement belonged to branches.

He completed probation.

Never violated conditions.

Started therapy beyond the required program.

Admitted he had been angrier at me than at Eli.

That mattered.

One evening he said:

“I thought you were taking everything because people listen to you.”

“They listen too much.”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

He laughed.

“Because every conversation with you felt like petitioning a king.”

That hurt.

Useful.

I changed some things.

At family ownership meetings, I stopped chairing automatically.

Independent facilitator.

Written agendas.

Votes recorded.

No Domenico closes discussion because Domenico has spoken.

The rod incident exposed more than Conrad’s entitlement.

It exposed my gravity.

Power distorts even when the person holding it behaves well.
