Chapter 24 - MIRIAM’S LAST SUMMER

Miriam’s last summer at Villa Ravello came when she was eighty-five.
She moved slowly.
Still wore pearls.
Still corrected table flowers.
Some things survived.
She sat beneath the covered patio where I had been standing years earlier.
Eli, now twenty-two, kicked a football across the lawn with Matteo.
Miriam watched.
“Which one owns that ball?”
I looked.
“No idea.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
Then she said:
“I thought keeping Paolo’s ground would keep Paolo.”
“I know.”
“It didn’t.”
“No.”
“Losing it didn’t lose him either.”
May you like
“No.”
Late wisdom is still wisdom.
