Chapter 21 - MIRIAM LOSES PAOLO AGAIN

Miriam was seventy-four when Orchard House underwent renovation.

Conrad removed Paolo’s old study furniture.

Miriam objected.

“That desk stays.”

Conrad said:

“No.”

“It was his.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I hate it.”

The desk was massive.

Dark.

Designed for another era.

Conrad wanted light wood and windows opened.

Miriam cried.

Not manipulation.

Grief.

Then Conrad said:

“Aunt Miriam, this is my house now.”

Real ownership.

Finally.

But the sentence sounded dangerously like old territorial language.

He corrected himself.

“My home. Not Dad’s museum.”

Better.

They donated Paolo’s desk to the family archive.

Miriam survived.

Memory adjusted again.
