Chapter 5 - MIRIAM’S MAP ROOM

Miriam had an old map room at Villa Ravello.

Not officially hers.

Nobody had official rooms anymore except private suites.

But she used the small library beside the west gallery for estate-history work because she had spent twenty years organizing family archives.

That gave her access to maps.

Old survey plans.

Garden drawings.

Household photographs.

She knew exactly how ambiguous historical use could look when presented selectively.

Nicholas and the archive manager reviewed documents Miriam had assembled for the upcoming mediation.

Nothing forged.

That mattered.

Real photographs.

Real letters.

Real seating plans.

But selected.

Photo:

Paolo hosting a barbecue on south lawn, 1998.

Not included:

Main-family Easter egg hunt there, 1999.

Photo:

Conrad’s childhood birthday under orchard trees.

Not included:

My sister’s wedding photographs from same space.

Letter:

My grandfather writing, “Let Paolo have his quiet side of the garden this summer.”

Not included:

Later sentence, “Next year we rotate.”

Selection can tell a false story without changing a single word.

Then a typed chronology Miriam prepared:

1994–2026 — CONTINUOUS USE BY PAOLO/CONRAD BRANCH.

False.

They used it often.

Not exclusively.

Then recent photographs.

Children’s toys.

Soccer goal.

Outdoor dining set.

Blue storage trunk.

Eli’s football.

The recent images were meant to make continuity look current.

Again.

Not legal proof.

Visual persuasion.

Then the handwritten note:

Children must learn boundaries before mediation or Domenico will turn common use into permanent claim.

I stared.

Domenico.

Me.

I had never claimed the lawn personally.

I supported foundation common use.

Miriam translated institutional planning into branch warfare.

That was her worldview.

Then another:

Matteo needs visible attachment to south grounds.

A five-year-old as exhibit.

Then:

Eli must stop wandering.

My three-year-old.

An obstacle.

That explained Conrad’s anger more clearly.

He had been hearing for months that every time Eli crossed south, it weakened something belonging to Matteo.

Adults taught him to interpret a toddler walking on grass as aggression.

Then I found one final note:

If Domenico’s child is seen playing there regularly, mediator may call usage genuinely common.

Maybe.

Maybe not.

The mediation would rely mostly on documents, appraisals, planning, and actual agreements.

May you like

But Miriam believed optics mattered.

So she policed a toddler.
