Chapter 13 - The necklace

Why had Marlene taken Claire’s necklace?

She claimed:

“It belonged to my daughter before it belonged to Lily.”

Wrong.

Claire specifically left personal jewelry to Lily under the estate memorandum.

Marlene later admitted she saw Lily wearing the necklace and became emotional.

She took it from the dresser intending to:

“Keep it for one night.”

No permission.

Was that grand theft?

No.

The necklace was worth around $450.

Police treated it as part of the family dispute and evidence explaining why Lily opened the purse.

The prosecutor did not build some dramatic jewelry case around it.

But emotionally?

It mattered to Lily.

“Grandma took Mommy.”

That was how she described it.

Not the necklace.
