Chapter 6 - The old power of attorney

Four years before Claire’s death, she signed a limited financial power of attorney.

Why?

She underwent major surgery.

I was traveling for work.

Marlene lived nearby.

The document allowed Marlene to handle certain limited matters if Claire was unavailable.

Insurance paperwork.

Specific banking tasks.

Property bills.

Nothing extraordinary.

The authority was temporary and narrowly written.

After Claire recovered, we forgot about it.

Marlene did not.

When Claire entered the hospital after the crash, Marlene produced a copy.

She began helping with:

Bills.

Mail.

Insurance.

Administrative calls.

At the time, that seemed useful.

Then something happened on the fifth day.

Something she never told me.
