Chapter 24 - I finally read the full hospital record

For months, I avoided it.

Then one night I sat at my kitchen table and read all 312 pages.

Most were boring.

Vital signs.

Medication administration.

Imaging.

Physical therapy.

Nursing notes.

Then Claire’s words.

Day six:

Patient asks if daughter Lily has attended school.

Day seven:

Patient tearful, requests husband bring child’s drawing.

Day eight:

Patient reports conflict with mother regarding paperwork.

Day nine:

Patient asks husband not be burdened until she feels stronger.

That line hurt.

Claire had hidden part of the dispute from me too.

Not because she distrusted me.

May you like

Because she thought she was protecting me while I was drowning.

Families sometimes create disaster by trying too hard not to burden each other.
