Chapter 15 - The estate claim reopens

Civil lawyers reviewed the old settlement.
Could we simply reverse everything?
No.
Settlements have finality.
Time limits exist.
Proof matters.
Some expenses Marlene claimed were legitimate.
Others were arguable.
The hospital document supported potential fraud or misrepresentation theories regarding how the settlement was obtained.
Eventually, accountants reconstructed years of transfers.
Of the original claim:
Approximately $92,000 represented expenses that could reasonably be substantiated.
Another portion was ambiguous family support.
A substantial remainder lacked reliable documentation or had already been reimbursed elsewhere.
The civil case settled.
Marlene agreed to repay:
$96,000
plus part of the estate’s new accounting and legal costs.
Not every dollar.
Evidence did not justify that.

Precision mattered.
The money returned to Lily’s trust.
