Chapter 14 - Marlene’s explanation

Through her lawyer, Marlene asked to speak with me.
I agreed only with counsel present.
She said:
“Claire was medicated.”
“The doctor documented capacity.”
“She was scared.”
“She still said no.”
“She didn’t understand the finances.”
“Then why did you hide the page?”
Silence.
I continued.
“Why?”
Marlene finally said:
“Because you would have turned her against me.”
“She was thirty-seven.”
“I was her mother.”
“That is not an answer.”
Her face hardened.
Then she said the sentence that explained almost everything:
“Claire always made emotional decisions. Someone had to be practical.”
May you like
Practical.
She had converted disrespect into responsibility.
