Chapter 11 - Ryan is arrested

Ryan’s lawyer told him to stop speaking.
He did.
Before that, he had already admitted enough to establish knowledge of Diane’s medication.
Police arrested both after prosecutors reviewed preliminary evidence.
Diane faced charges including:
Child endangerment.
Unlawful restraint.
Assault-related conduct.
Unlawful administration of medication depending statute.
Additional charges would depend on toxicology.
Ryan faced:
Child endangerment.
Assault/complicity-related counts tied to holding Lily during medication administration.
Unlawful restraint theory based on knowing participation in basement confinement.
Forgery-related investigation involving custody documents and the false nanny signature.
No attempted murder.
No kidnapping.
No theatrical life sentences.
Then protective orders.
Family court issued temporary order:
I had sole physical custody of Lily.
Ryan no in-person contact pending further hearing.
No contact through Diane.
No removal from state.
The court did not terminate Ryan’s parental rights.
That requires far more.
I moved Lily out of the Carter house.
Not because I legally had to.
Because she cried near the basement door.
We stayed with my sister Rachel Foster.
Lily slept in my room.
Every night she woke at least twice.
“Mommy here?”
“Yes.”
“Door open?”
“Yes.”
“Food?”
“In the kitchen.”
Sometimes she asked for crackers at 3 a.m.
I gave one.
Her therapist later helped me create predictable snack routines so reassurance did not become endless overnight eating.
