Chapter 5 - The storage unit

Sarah did not discover Ryan’s storage unit by magic.

Police found a monthly payment on a debit card Ryan had used during questioning to verify recent locations.

The transaction description:

Northway Storage 2187.

I knew nothing about it.

Sarah asked Ryan.

“What is stored there?”

“Business records.”

“What business?”

“Personal consulting.”

He worked in private wealth management.

Possible.

Then officers learned the unit lease began eight months earlier.

Access records showed Ryan entered:

Two nights before my Boston trip.

Four days into the trip.

The morning I returned.

Investigators sought a warrant based on:

Possible child-abuse evidence.

Known hidden-camera packaging found in our garage trash.

Ryan’s inconsistent account.

Storage access timing.

The warrant was granted.

Inside Unit 2187:

Three plastic filing boxes.

Two laptops.

A network video recorder.

Camera packaging.

Printed family-court forms.

A portable safe.

No drugs.

No kidnapped child.

No secret cash mountain.

The digital devices were seized for forensic review.

The paper files were photographed and preserved.

One folder:

L.C. Behavior Timeline.

Lily Carter.

Another:

E.C. Absence Documentation.

Emma Carter.

My name.

Inside:

Travel dates.

Screenshots of me leaving house with luggage.

Copies of hotel receipts.

My mother’s hospital admission schedule.

Notes:

Primary caregiver absent 11 days.

Pattern of placing extended family ahead of child.

I stared at the page until words blurred.

I had gone to help my seventy-one-year-old mother after surgery.

Ryan had been home.

Yet the file reframed my trip as abandonment.

Then custody forms.

Not signed court orders.

Draft emergency petition.

Proposed affidavit.

A statement purportedly from former nanny Heather Mills claiming:

Emma routinely leaves Lily without adequate meal planning and becomes emotionally volatile when questioned.

Heather had never said that.

Police contacted her.

She denied it.

Her typed name appeared beneath a signature she said was not hers.

Another page:

Draft request for Ryan to receive temporary primary custody if I “attempted sudden relocation.”

I had never threatened relocation.

Then the network recorder.

Its label:

May you like

Lily Bedroom 1.

My skin went cold.
