Chapter 19 - Ryan does not take the plea

Prosecutors offered Ryan:
Plea to felony child endangerment.
Misdemeanor assault/complicity.
Forgery-related count reduced.
Recommendation below trial exposure.
He refused.
Why?
He insisted:
“I never wanted Lily hurt.”
True perhaps.
He also insisted:
“I was trying to keep the family together.”
That had become his favorite phrase.
Family together.
While preparing a custody petition against me.
While hiding cameras.
While holding his child down for medication.
Then his defense:
Diane dominated him.
He grew up under severe control.
Psychologist documented:
Longstanding enmeshment.
Fear of maternal disapproval.
Conflict avoidance.
That explained behavior.
It did not erase choices.
Then prosecution’s strongest text:
Ryan:
No basement tonight. Emma will notice if Lily starts panicking near the stairs again.
Diane:
She’ll forget.
Ryan:
Just until Emma comes back. Then everything changes.
He knew about the basement.

The question was not whether.
It was how much.
