Chapter 10 - The celebration reserve

The backup ledger revealed Bianca’s real system.

It was not merely vendor rebates.

Those were the visible layer.

For nearly six years, Bianca and Luca had operated what they privately called:

The Celebration Reserve.

It was not a formal Moretti company account.

It began innocently.

Large family events often changed at the last minute.

A florist refunded $8,000.

A caterer issued a $12,000 credit.

A furniture company offered a future-event allowance.

Rather than send every small refund back through multiple family companies and private payers, Bianca proposed keeping credits available for the next family event.

Luca agreed.

That alone was sloppy.

Not necessarily criminal.

Then scope expanded.

Cash rebates joined the reserve.

Vendor referral bonuses joined.

Unused event deposits joined.

Refunds from canceled services joined.

Credits from hotels joined.

Eventually, certain vendors sent payments directly to a Verde-controlled account.

Over six years:

Gross inflows approximately $1.34 million.

That number looked explosive.

The details were more complicated.

About $490,000 was later used for legitimate family events.

Roughly $180,000 paid actual vendor costs and expenses that otherwise would have been reimbursable.

Another portion represented legitimate disclosed fees.

The unsupported or personally beneficial portion was significantly lower than the gross total.

Still substantial.

Investigators and accountants eventually estimated approximately:

$412,000

in benefits that could not be justified as authorized family-event spending.

Where did it go?

Bianca’s personal luxury travel.

Renovation of Verde’s showroom.

A lease deposit.

Personal jewelry purchases coded as styling inventory.

Payments on a vacation property.

Luca received benefits too.

Not direct bags of cash.

His personal birthday dinners were paid from reserve.

A yacht weekend.

Private transportation.

Golf event.

Roughly:

$96,000 in questionable personal benefit attributable to him.

He had already begun repayment before Emmie’s birthday.

That was what Bianca did not know.

Luca had negotiated with company counsel eight months earlier.

He disclosed his part.

Repaid $118,000 including disputed amounts and interest reserve.

Resigned procurement authority.

Agreed to cooperate with independent accounting.

Bianca believed Luca was still protecting her.

He was not.

Then came the most important line in the ledger.

Projected this July:

MORETTI SUMMER — EXPECTED VERDE MARGIN + REBATES: $214,000

Bianca had budgeted against money she expected from Emmie’s birthday event before I removed her.

She had already used part of that expected cash flow to secure a short-term business line.

When I turned the event into a private child’s birthday and hired independent vendors, her projected income vanished.

She did not merely lose prestige.

She developed a cash problem.

And in her mind:

Emmie had taken her party.
