Chapter 15 - Luca comes home

Luca returned with his lawyer.
Not to my house.
Neutral office.
I had not seen him in months.
He looked older.
“Emmie hate me?”
“No.”
“She opened the gift?”
“Yes.”
“The charms?”
“She loves them.”
He smiled briefly.
Then:
“I should’ve told you about Bianca earlier.”
“Yes.”
“I kept thinking if I repaid my part, I could leave hers alone.”
“Why?”
“Because she covered for me.”
“When?”
“Years.”
He looked down.
“She hid personal expenses I put through events.”
“Then you hid hers.”
“Yes.”

Sometimes one person protects another once.
Then protection becomes debt.

Then debt becomes silence.
Then silence becomes infrastructure.
