Chapter 7 - The annual summer party

The party Emmie thought was purely her birthday had history.
For sixteen years, my family held a large summer gathering on the second Saturday of July.
Originally:
My grandmother’s anniversary dinner.
Later:
A client-and-family social weekend.
After she died:
Just “the Moretti Summer.”
Bianca ran it for nearly a decade.
It was her showcase.
Magazine photographers sometimes attended.
Luxury vendors competed for visibility.
For Bianca, the party was:
Marketing.
Client development.
Relationship management.
And substantial revenue.
Then Emmie was born.
Her birthday fell within days of the traditional event.
For several years, we combined them loosely.
Family event during afternoon.
Adult dinner later.
Last year I changed that.
I said:
“No more business guests. This is Emmie’s birthday.”
Bianca hated it.
This year I went further.
I hired an independent event company.
Not Verde Social House.
Bianca had no vendor authority.
No budget.
No guest-list control.
No sponsorship discussions.
No private client dinners.
For the first time in years, the July event was truly about an eight-year-old.
That was what she meant.
“This party should have been hers.”
Hers.
May you like
Not because July 12 was Bianca’s birthday.
Because she believed the event itself belonged to her.
