Chapter 21 - Emmie starts hiding presents

A therapist noticed it before I did.
After her birthday, Emmie stopped opening gifts immediately.
She carried them to her room.
Placed them in closet.
Opened them alone.
Why?
“If people see, they take.”
I sat on floor beside her.
“No one is taking your presents.”
“Bianca did.”
“Yes.”
“So people can.”
Children find holes in adult reassurance quickly.
I corrected.
“Someone could try. But the adults around you are responsible for stopping that.”
She looked at me.
“You didn’t stop first.”
No.
I had arrived after.
“I didn’t.”
That truth mattered more than pretending omnipotence.
Then:
“But I believed you immediately when I saw.”
She nodded.
“And camera.”
“Yes.”
She thought.
May you like
“Camera believed too.”
I almost smiled.
