Chapter 1

The bright suburban sunlight flooded the living room, casting long shadows across the beige carpet. Diane Morgan stood near the white front door, her posture rigid with impatience. Her short, light-brown hair was perfectly styled, and she wore a crisp gray athletic shirt with black leggings. A premium sports bag hung heavily over her shoulder, and her right hand gripped a carbon-fiber pickleball paddle.

On the floor, one-year-old Leo crawled past scattered plastic blocks. He babbled softly, his tiny hands pressing into the carpet as he navigated toward Diane’s white sneakers.

Diane looked down, her face twisting into a scowl. Without a second of hesitation, she swung her foot forward and kicked the toddler squarely in the chest.

Leo was sent tumbling backward across the room. He rolled twice before his soft face slammed brutally against the wooden leg of the coffee table. For a fraction of a second, the room was silent. Then, Leo’s face flushed deep red, and he unleashed a piercing, agonizing scream.

Diane did not flinch. She stared at the sobbing child with absolute disgust.

"Get that kid away from me!" Diane snapped.

Across the room, sitting helplessly in a wheelchair, thirty-four-year-old Elena gasped in pure horror. She wore a loose light-gray T-shirt and soft gray pants, her left leg encased in a heavy, metallic medical brace from her recent crash.

"Leo!" Elena screamed.

She desperately threw her weight forward, pulling herself out of the wheelchair. Her body hit the floor with a heavy thud. Gritting her teeth, Elena dragged her immobilized leg behind her, clawing her way across the beige carpet. She reached the wailing boy and pulled his trembling body tightly against her chest.

Elena looked up, her blue eyes blazing with a mixture of tears and violent rage.

"He’s your grandson!" Elena yelled.

Diane rolled her eyes, her fair skin flushing slightly with annoyance. She tightened her grip on the pickleball paddle and turned her back, walking toward the white front door.

"Not my problem," Diane muttered.

By the playpen, Leo’s twin sister, Maya, began to wail, terrified by the sudden noise and tension. Elena ignored the pain radiating from her shattered leg. She hugged Leo tighter, her jaw locking as she watched her mother reach for the doorknob.

Elena snatched her phone from the floor with her free hand. She hit a speed-dial number and put it on speaker.

"Daniel. Cut her off," Elena said coldly.

Diane paused, her hand hovering over the brass doorknob. She slowly turned around, confusion flashing across her features.

"Everything. Today," Elena commanded, staring directly into her mother’s eyes.

The slick, professional voice of Daniel Cho, Elena’s attorney, echoed from the phone’s speaker.

"The house too?" Daniel asked.

Elena pulled Leo protectively against her collarbone, refusing to break eye contact with the woman who had just assaulted her child.

"Take the house," Elena answered.

Diane froze completely. The color drained from her face, leaving her rosy skin pale. The carbon-fiber pickleball paddle slowly slipped from her fingers, hitting the floor with a hollow clack.

Elena reached into her leather handbag on the floor. Her hand trembled with adrenaline as she pulled out a heavy, block-shaped device wrapped in black tape. A red digital timer glowed ominously on its face. It was a time bomb.
