Chapter 10

The two women struggled violently over the heavy device. Elena gripped the bomb with her right hand, using her left to push aggressively against Diane’s shoulder.

"Let go of it, Mom!" Elena shrieked.

"Give it to me!" Diane snarled, her athletic strength overpowering Elena’s injured frame.

The red timer on the face of the bomb dropped to exactly three minutes. In the scuffle, Diane’s thumb slipped and violently jammed against the steel toggle switch on the top of the device.

A sharp, high-pitched mechanical whine erupted from the bomb.

Both women froze instantly. Diane let go of the device and scrambled backward across the beige carpet, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror.

"You armed it!" Elena screamed in horror.

The red timer suddenly sped up, the digits blurring as they began counting down in actual seconds rather than minutes.

"Oh my god, it's real," Diane gasped, crawling rapidly toward the front door.

"Daniel, call the bomb squad, NOW!" Elena yelled at the phone on the floor.

"Dialing 911 now, Elena, get out of the house!" Daniel yelled back.

Elena frantically grabbed Leo from the floor, pulling his sleeping body against her chest. She looked desperately toward the playpen where Maya was standing, crying loudly at the sudden chaos.

"Mom, help me get Maya!" Elena begged, struggling to pull herself up with her braced leg.

Diane reached the front door and grabbed the brass deadbolt, her hand shaking violently as she unlocked it.

"I'm sorry, Elena!" Diane sobbed, ripping the door open.

Diane bolted out of the house, the bright suburban sunlight swallowing her fleeing figure. The door slammed shut behind her, leaving Elena alone on the floor.

Elena gritted her teeth, ignoring the blinding pain in her leg, and began crawling desperately toward Maya’s playpen. The mechanical whine of the bomb grew louder, a piercing shriek that filled the living room.

The digital timer hit forty seconds.

Suddenly, the heavy front door swung open with a violent crash.

Elena stopped crawling, clutching Leo tightly to her chest. She looked up, expecting to see police officers rushing through the entrance.

Instead, a tall silhouette stood in the doorway, blocking the bright afternoon sun. The man stepped slowly into the living room, a heavy black duffel bag slung over his shoulder.

The bomb’s timer hit exactly ten seconds and suddenly stopped, the mechanical whine dying instantly.

"Hello, Elena," Mark said quietly.
