Chapter 8

Elena’s grip on the bomb tightened, her knuckles turning white. The red timer glared at fourteen minutes.

"Daniel, trace that routing number right now," Elena ordered.

"I'm trying, but it’s bouncing through multiple shell corporations in the Caymans," Daniel replied, the frantic clicking of his keyboard echoing through the phone.

Diane slowly stood up, brushing off her black leggings with an air of returning arrogance.

"You can't trace it, Daniel, it's a ghost account," Diane sneered.

Elena carefully pushed Leo slightly behind her, her maternal instincts flaring as her mother’s confidence returned.

"Who is the beneficiary, Mom?" Elena asked sharply.

Diane walked over to the brown sofa and sat down, crossing her legs as if she were at a casual country club luncheon.

"It's Greg's insurance policy," Diane stated calmly.

Elena’s stomach plummeted. The mechanic who killed her husband had access to the family fortune.

"You gave him a backdoor to the trust?" Elena asked in disbelief.

"He threatened to go to the police if I didn't guarantee his silence," Diane justified.

"So you paid him off with my children's money!" Elena yelled.

Diane waved a dismissive hand, her eyes flicking nervously to the ticking bomb in Elena’s lap.

"It was the only way to keep the family intact," Diane argued.

"By letting my husband's murderer walk free?" Elena retorted, disgusted.

"Elena, I have a hit on the final destination," Daniel interrupted urgently.

Elena leaned toward the phone on the carpet.

"Who holds the account, Daniel?" Elena asked.

"It's not Greg, Elena... the account is in Mark's name," Daniel revealed.

The living room plunged into absolute silence. Maya dropped a toy in her playpen, the soft plastic clatter sounding like a gunshot in the quiet room. Elena stared at the phone, her mind desperately trying to process the impossible information.

"That's a lie," Elena whispered.

Diane uncrossed her legs, leaning forward on the sofa with a deep, confused frown.

"Mark is dead, he can't open an offshore account," Diane muttered.

"The account was activated two days ago," Daniel stated clearly.

Elena looked down at the bomb in her lap, the red numbers dropping to eleven minutes, a horrifying new theory taking root in her mind.

"Daniel, who authorized the transfer?" Elena demanded.
