Chapter 5

Before Elena could respond, a sharp, rhythmic knocking echoed from the front door. Diane gasped, taking a sudden step toward the entrance. Elena instantly raised her hand, her thumb hovering a millimeter over the steel toggle switch.
"Don't move," Elena hissed.
"Diane? Are you in there? You're late for the tournament!" a muffled, cheerful voice called from outside.
It was Susan, Diane’s wealthy, oblivious doubles partner. Diane looked at Elena with wild, pleading eyes. She pointed frantically at the door, silently begging for permission to answer.
"Get rid of her," Elena whispered softly.
Diane approached the door, her hands shaking violently as she pressed her face close to the wood.
"I'm coming down with a bug, Susan, I can't make it!" Diane yelled through the door.
"Oh no! Do you need me to bring you some soup later?" Susan asked brightly.
Diane closed her eyes, a tear of sheer panic leaking out and rolling down her rosy cheek.
"No, just go win the match for us!" Diane called back, trying to force cheer into her voice.
"Okay, feel better!" Susan replied.
The sound of footsteps faded down the concrete walkway, followed by the distant slam of an expensive car door and an engine fading down the suburban street. The silence in the living room returned, heavier and more suffocating than before.
Elena let out a long breath, her thumb relaxing slightly from the trigger.
"That was very convincing," Elena noted.
Diane leaned her back against the white door, sliding down slowly until she was sitting on the floor across the room from Elena.
"You are a monster," Diane wept into her hands.
Elena felt a sharp twinge in her heart, but she looked down at Leo’s bruised face, and the empathy vanished in an instant.
"I learned from the best," Elena replied coldly.
The phone crackled, Daniel’s voice slicing through the heavy atmosphere.
"Elena, the offshore accounts are officially drained and locked," Daniel confirmed.
Diane lifted her head, her makeup slightly smeared beneath her eyes. The wealth she had guarded, manipulated, and killed for was completely gone.
"Where did you send the money?" Diane asked, her voice hollow.
Elena adjusted the bomb in her lap, watching the timer drop below thirty minutes.
"To a blind trust in the children's names," Elena answered.
Diane let out a bitter, mocking laugh, wiping her nose with the back of her hand.

"They won't live to spend it if you don't turn that thing off," Diane spat.
"Tell me about the mechanic," Elena demanded again.
