Chapter 6

Diane stared at the beige carpet, her shoulders slumped in absolute defeat. The immaculate athletic wear now just looked like a ridiculous costume on a broken woman.

"His name is Greg," Diane whispered quietly.

Elena leaned forward slightly, ignoring the searing pain radiating from her braced leg.

"What did you pay him to do?" Elena pressed.

Diane squeezed her eyes shut, shaking her head as if trying to physically dislodge the memory from her brain.

"I didn't pay him to kill Mark!" Diane insisted frantically.

"Then what did you pay him for?" Elena yelled, her voice echoing off the bright walls.

Leo whimpered at the sudden volume, burying his face into Elena’s side. Elena instantly softened her posture, stroking her son’s fine hair to calm him. Maya stood up in her playpen, watching them with wide, curious eyes.

"I paid him to steal the ledger from Mark's car," Diane confessed.

Elena’s hand tightened on the black tape of the bomb.

"The ledger with the proof of your embezzlement," Elena clarified.

Diane nodded slowly, her chin resting against her chest.

"Greg was supposed to break in while Mark was at the office," Diane explained.

Elena felt a cold sweat break out on the back of her neck. She remembered the police report, the shattered glass, the horrific details of the twisted metal at the bottom of the ravine.

"But Mark came out early," Elena deduced.

Diane let out a choked sob, pulling her knees up to her chest.

"Greg panicked, he tampered with the brake line so Mark couldn't chase him," Diane cried.

"And you covered it up," Elena said, the absolute horror of the truth washing over her.

"I didn't know until after the crash, I swear!" Diane pleaded.

Elena stared at her mother, feeling a profound, terrifying emptiness. The woman who had given birth to her had prioritized a stolen ledger over her own daughter's happiness and safety.

"Daniel, did you hear all of that?" Elena asked.

"Loud and clear, Elena," Daniel replied solemnly.

Diane’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with a new, terrifying realization.

"You're recording this?" Diane asked in horror.

"The line is patched directly to the District Attorney's office," Daniel confirmed.

Diane scrambled to her feet, her survival instinct overriding her despair. She looked wildly around the living room, her eyes locking onto the heavy brass doorknob of the front door.

"You set me up!" Diane screamed.

Elena shifted the bomb in her lap, her thumb resting heavy on the trigger switch.

"Sit down, Mom, or we all go together," Elena warned.
