Chapter 4

Diane froze mid-step. The bright rays of the afternoon sun caught the sudden sheen of sweat on her forehead. She slowly lowered her hands, staring at Elena as if the disabled woman on the floor had grown a second head.

"What are you talking about?" Diane asked, her voice dangerously thin.

Elena leaned her head back against the base of the sofa. Her injured leg throbbed with a sickening rhythm, the metal brace digging into her swollen flesh.

"Mark’s car didn't just veer off the bridge, Mom," Elena stated.

"The police report said it was black ice," Diane countered quickly.

Elena let out a dry, humorless laugh. She gently placed Leo on the carpet next to her, handing him a soft plastic toy to keep him occupied. The baby sniffled but took the toy, leaning against his mother’s side.

"It was sixty degrees that night, Diane," Elena replied, dropping the title of 'Mom'.

Diane swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the explosive device. The red timer glowed brightly. Thirty-four minutes.

"I don't know anything about cars, Elena," Diane said.

"But you know a lot about the mechanic who serviced it," Elena pushed.

Diane’s silence was deafening. The only sounds in the room were the soft babbling of Maya in her playpen and the quiet, steady breathing of the two women.

"Daniel, are the offshore trusts frozen?" Elena asked the phone.

"Almost there, they have a secondary security protocol," Daniel answered.

Diane suddenly rushed forward, stopping just a few feet from Elena and the bomb.

"You are going to blow up your own children over a conspiracy theory?" Diane yelled.

Elena placed her hand firmly on top of the bomb, her fingers wrapping around the black tape.

"Mark knew you were stealing from the trust," Elena said.

Diane crossed her arms, her posture defensive and rigid.

"I was managing the family assets, as your father intended!" Diane snapped.

Elena’s eyes narrowed, her gaze cutting through her mother’s pathetic justifications.

"You forged my signature to drain my girls' college funds," Elena whispered.

Diane looked away, unable to meet her daughter’s fierce blue eyes. She stared at the white front door, the deadbolt locking her inside this nightmare.

"I was going to put it back after the real estate deal closed," Diane muttered.

Elena picked up the bomb and placed it directly in her lap, letting the weight of it press against her good leg.

"You killed my husband for a real estate deal," Elena said softly.

Diane spun around, her face pale, her hands balling into tight fists.

"I didn't kill anyone!" Diane screamed.
